Do not forget extending the lives of women who nature had stated should had died of all kind of diseases such as breast cancer or in child birth.

In the good old days you could look forward to having a number of wives as they die giving birth to your children.

Damn PP for forcing you to divorce your first wife in order to get a newer model.

Couldn't you find something from the Victorian time period to support your thesis rather than relying on something written in 1974 before much of the advent modern birth control and it's use?

What do you think is the use?

@spendius,
Oh.. wait. women live longer because they don't die so often in child birth.

Hmmmm.... How ironic that you would attempt to use the person that states that modern medicine reduces our life.

I didn't say that. Our life and our health are not the same thing.

@spendius,
I see.. So why did you reference Ivan Illich then?

Illich states
Quote:
To be in good health means not only to be successful in coping with reality but also to enjoy the success; it means to be able to feel alive in pleasure and in pain; it means to cherish but also to risk survival. Health and suffering as experienced sensations are phenomena that distinguish men from beasts.2 Only storybook lions are said to suffer and only pets to merit compassion when they are in ill health.3

So, do you agree that women are more alive if they die earlier?

@parados,
Don't be ridiculous. What are you trying to say? That you have won the argument because you're in favour of women living longer. Get yourself a ******* violin.

Yall are determined to kill another thread with this discussion, eh? Why have you given up on the last thread you killed? No one was watching except the handful of you blathering away?
This thread was begun by AU in something like 2005. I am sorry to see it go but you can have it if that is what you want. There will be a new one started about the economy.

@spendius,
I'm saying that you have probably availed yourself of the NHS on more than one occasion.

I don't think I need the violin unless we need it to drown out the screaming hypocrisy.

The NHS is one of our fundamental rights. Of course he's used it we all do. Hands off.

@realjohnboy,
What are you talking about John? Health matters might break the economy. The demand for treatment is potentially unlimited. Both CBS and Fox News have special feechewers on health almost every night.

Birth control, high-tech treatment, life expectancy, welfare, diet and suchlike are economic factors of the first rank.

Nobody is stopping you discussing anything you want. Your indignation is misplaced. Where is the evidence that this thread is being "killed"? You're obsessed with running the show.

There are 351 thousand views here.

@parados,
You have a doublethink problem para.

You are a good bloke because you are in favour of everybody being kept alive for as long as possible and you are a good bloke because you are in favour of nobody having to pay for your policy.

Thus you get a round of applause everywhere you go and have the capacity to forget each side of the question when addressing the other. Obviously you will project the hypocrisy onto anybody conveniently close enough. By assertion.

You exist in that silly realm of politics where everything is always wonderful and by constantly saying so you get some credit sticking to your person. You get to milk on the pap of compassion and kindness without incurring any unpopularity by asking for the funds to achieve them.

There is at least 10 like that in every English pub.

No, George - once again, NOBODY has proposed raising the current top tax bracket to 70%. Thomas proposed creating a NEW top tax bracket starting at a million dollars of income. So our hypothetical million-dollar earner wouldn't pay a single penny extra in taxes under Thomas' new scheme than he pays today.

Yes I did, and no she wouldn't. George got his math wrong or misread what I proposed.

Earlier, Thomas wrote:
I would merely tax all income after the 1,000,000th annual dollar at the top of the Laffer curve. That would be about 70%, according to current research into the matter. [Emphasis added---T.]

Everyone who makes a million dollars a year or less would pay the same federal tax as before. If you earn two millions, you pay whatever you pay on the first million, plus $700,000 on the second million. (And so forth for any additional millions you may earn.)

@spendius,
Quote:
The first and simplest stage in the discipline, which can be taught even to young children, is called, in Newspeak, crimestop. Crimestop means the faculty of stopping short, as though by instinct, at the threshold of any dangerous thought. It includes the power of not grasping analogies, of failing to perceive logical errors, of misunderstanding the simplest arguments if they are inimical to Ingsoc, and of being bored or repelled by any train of thought which is capable of leading in a heretical direction. Crimestop, in short, means protective stupidity. But stupidity is not enough. On the contrary, orthodoxy in the full sense demands a control over one's own mental processes as complete as that of a contortionist over his body.

We've already hit the bottom of the well with GW Bush's Great Recession; the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. That takes skill.
