While I know you hate to admit it, having over 100,000 US troops in Europe has gone a long way to help keep the peace

IMHO, that is what has allowed Europe to prosper like it has, because they haven't had to spend money to defend themselves, they knew we would.

Thanks a million €€€!

Seriously, mm, the forerunner of the EU, the European Coal and Steel Community, was founded shortly after WWII.

Okay, a couple of years later, in 1951.

Well, we had had nearly 300,000 US-troops here in the American Zone of Occupation and the American Sector of Berlin until the late 1980's.

And due to Potsdam we weren't allowed to have an own military force, (which changed later, though) but got a lot of forein troops stationed here besides from the US, the UK, France and Russia: Canadians, Belgians, Dutch, Danish, Polish ... until 1990.

@mysteryman,
Even if we give Bush credit for our troops leaving Iraq, he was responsible for the longest war in US history that depleted our assets and military for a lie created by his administration.

@Walter Hinteler,
In 1990, mm, there were 415,000 US, British, French, Dutch and Belgian soldiers in what was than the Federal Republic ("West Germany").
In 2007, it were 95,000.

In 2007, the German Federal Republic paid 100,435,000 Euros for those (88,635,000 in 2010).
The salary for all foreign troops is paid by an office of my district - the employees there by our tax money.

@izzythepush,
I don't take the Euro sceptics seriously. It's easy to talk about things that are not going to happen. Anything coming close to withdrawal from Europe would concentrate the minds wonderfully.

It gets them attention. I daresay most of yesterday's rebels have constituencies in the South-east.

I'm not particularly bothered either way. It's a bit like a garden equipment sharing co-operative.

@spendius,
So any expressed displeasure with the EU can be chalked up to kooks?

@Finn dAbuzz,
In the UK, there has always been an anti-Europe sentiment.

And it has been there when the joined the European Economic Community as it is today. (The UK's United Kingdom Independence Party is totally anti-Europe, but gets a lot of money from the EU ... for their 11 Members of the European Parliament and staff.)

Americans do like to claim credit for everything, regardless whether or not it's justified. As far as I'm concerned, the sooner their troops leave the UK the better.

While I'd wager that an assignment in the UK is something to be coveted by our airmen, I agree.

I assume you're OK with them taking their aircraft back with them?

I'd like to see US military personnel (and equipment) pulled out of Europe altogether.

You're all big boys now. I'm sure you can handle Putin on your own.

Now that the US is going to charge Canucks $5.50 to enter your country, I'm sure the economy will improve immeasurably. The Buy American law should do a lot as well, as it will force us to find new markets. Good luck with it all.

Good, then we are in agreement.

Now who do we need to see about this in our respective countries so your military doesn't have to feel like an ally in their own country and we can save some money?

@Finn dAbuzz,
Just today, the American government actually decided to bring in a new tax. Not against the rich, but your most frequent visitors. Great way to cure the economy... Tax people who actually spend money and bring business to your country. Perhaps we should do the same to every barrel of oil, or water, or power...

@Ceili,
All Canada has to do is start charging American visitors an equal or more for the "same" purpose. 2 Cents 2 Cents Mr. Green Mr. Green

@cicerone imposter,
Tit for tat politics. No wonder we live in a screwed up world...
What happened to free trade, neighbours with the longest undefended border...
Isolationist policies used against us Terrorists to the north eh! I hope this new tax fills up the coffers drained by bad financial practices, wars and bank bailouts... after all, why should you clean up the mess you made by yourself?
