What you say is true; minimum wage doesn't affect hiring or firing of workers. That's been proven in San Francisco where the minimum wage is now $10.55/hour. The unemployment rate in San Francisco is 7.7% while the California unemployment rate is 9.8%

it is one of the best places in America to live, so it can command a premium.....the best people want to live there so businesses expect that they will get a productivity return on investment for the extra labor costs because the quality of the labor pool is far above average. not all of America is far above average however, you can not take the sf and washington state high min wage experiments and expect to get the same results nationally

@hawkeye10,
Why not? How did you arrive at that conclusion? No past federal wage increases have affected jobs negatively. Where's your evidence that higher wages will increase unemployment?

As a matter of fact, several states (including California) have higher minimum wage than the federal minimum wage. There's no evidence that those states lost jobs.

@cicerone imposter,
Min wage is 9.19 here, and my mamma not having raised idiots I keep my labor count as low as possible....in fact I wrote into the business plan a paragraph on proceedures that would be put into place specifically to allow for low employee counts per hour of operation.

@hawkeye10,
Your personal experience doesn't explain minimum wage and job loss to our total economy.

Are you arguing you would keep employee counts high if the minimum wage was lower? Why would you do that? Would your competitors do the same thing?

No business would keep employees around that aren't being productive. Why do you think the wage being paid changes that?

The safety net was never meant to be long term.

You should be ashamed of yourself if you are earning minimum wage for more
than 3 months, the same goes for collecting unemployment, food stamps etc...

Normally in this business one keeps enough staff on the ready to handle peak periods reasonably well, however when labor is so expensive that does not make sense economically, so the smart operators keep only enough staff so that we can reasonably handle 90% of the rushes,and we ask our customers to understand that we are not meeting our service standards the other 10%. In this state servers get the whole min wage plus tips, that runs to about $10.40 in cost to me each employee hour......you're damn tootin I am going to run as lean as I think I can get away with.

@hawkeye10,
You said,
Quote:
smart operators
as if that doesn't apply to all businesses. If any company keeps staff that's not needed, that's not good management of the company. "smart operators" know how to work staff that results in the least cost, but at the most efficient. Nobody expects business owners to employ workers they do not need.

Government employs workers they don't need, why can't a business be run like the government?

Obama is stealing any chance for this country to ever again have a healthy economy.

His policies are designed to knock the USA down a notch or two and this includes a weak economy.

Obama created this sequester crisis... Obama needs to man up and fix it.

I hindsight setting up a large unneccisary challange with dire consequences for failure was probably not such a hot idea....these bozo's have not been able to pass a budget in years and the traditional process for making law (using committes and using deliberations) has largely been non-op....expecting Washington to do this was hugely unrealistic.

It's a great idea if you are Obama or share Obama's dream to rip this country a new one.

bullshit...Obama does what he thinks is best, the problem is that he has horrible judgement and he hates power so he never learned how to use it. Obama's idea of being in power is being a dick, he does not know anything other than dismissing those who don't agree with him and doing his best to be the school yard bully. It is highly likely that history will write Obama even worse than it writes Bush the younger, which is saying something, but not for the reasons that you state.

You really don't know how history is written, do you? Obama's performance rating is over 50% except for Faux News.
