House passes ban on all human cloningWASHINGTON (AP) — After a lengthy debate on science and human life, the House on Thursday passed a bill endorsed by President Bush that would ban human cloning and sentence violators to prison and fines as high as $1 million.
In a 241-155 vote, lawmakers decided to ban all cloning even as some urged for an exception so researchers can continue to work toward cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and diabetes.
The measure is expected to have an uphill battle in the Senate, where Republicans lack the 60 votes necessary to end debate and force a vote.
Lawmakers in the House maintained that all human cloning research must be banned because a cloned embryo is a human even before implantation in a womb, and to destroy it for research would be immoral.
I believe that human cloning should be illegal. However, not that which is used for research. Hopefully this travesty will never pass in the senate.

This is a hard one. We definitely shouldn't be cloning humans just for the purpose of producing a copy. Besides which, the flawed technology would produce a young human who was genetically the same age as the donor. But countries like ours must be able to research. It should be remembered that such legislation will have little effect internationally. The result will just be scientists going to those countries which offer them the most freedom to do their work.

the intent is not to reproduce humans but to aid medical research/treatments. this is another Bush step back in time agenda from the religious right who said all the same things about in vitro fertilizatons.

Bush is hoping, praying and pandering to the far
religious right - the concept of cloning does not
necessarily have anything to do with a live
fetus - so many misconceptions - but it does
seem Bush is only too happy to take advantage
of every one of them....using American's lack of
knowledge - treating us like ignorant fools - denying
the world of research their best chance yet at
learning how to help and possibly cure some of
the diseases which curse our generations.
But then - I doubt Bush plans on having many of
us around -since he has already moved to allow
social security bottom out, it would seem most
rational to do absolutely NOTHING about advances
in medical care which may allow americans to
actually LIVE LONGER? What a disaster that would
be to Bush's plans. One can only hope there are some
intelligent persons in the Senate who do not owe
their positions or party allegiance to Bush.

After all, let us face the facts. The House will
pass anything, no matter how ludicrous at
the current point in time - when no one seems
to be sure of where public opinion really is.
Bush is betting on his radical religious, but I am
betting that Americans are more intelligent than
we are given credit for.
In essence, the House passed something, which
really MEANS NOTHING - but it makes Bush et al.
look good to the religious right, without having to
take a position on any REAL issue at all. The actual
genuine scientific issues at hand with respect to
research are far too complex for anyone like Bush
or the members of the House to even comprehend,
let alone to vote on. It is all for show!

Not sure how basic research correlates to a negative opinion on cloning!?

It was an assinine decision by the house. I trust the senate decision will not be a 'clone.'

Religious fundamentalism, over the centuries, has been suspicious of, and fought against the advances of science. I think that the climate in this country right now is not one which will foster scientific growth.

It is a pity, because as the baby boomers age, they would surely benefit from some of the advances that cloning research would provide against some of the terrible diseases that befall older people!

Religious fundamentalists are America's version of the Taliban. They are presently lead by imam Omar Bush.
