why did the colonists believe that british efforts to tax them violated their rights and was a plot to enslave them?

They believed that only their own elected legislatures had the right to impose taxes on them. "No taxation without representation." Furthermore, Great Britain had imposed highly restrictive manufacturing and trade rules on us.
