What exactly is the "Crud"?

Ohh my, for any of you that have the intelligence to tell me, I'd really like to know?

I know part of mine boils down to allergies, which I have a flare up about every 3 months. The last one was in November, he x-rayed my sinus cavities and told me they were the worst that he'd EVER SEEN. Gee, what a great outlook on those...

A typical doctors visit renders an Antibiotic, told to take IBProfren, and then my usual Rhinocort and some Allegra D tablets which I have been told that I will have to use those two probably for life. Geeee, what fun.

I am so tired of this mess, My sinuses are so bad that I can't breathe, smell or taste muchless anything right now. Its coming out my ears and eyes.

Then my throat is swelled up and feels like its closing off and this hacking cough..that I can't get rid of. (the throat and cough is something else)

I will see my doctor this round, but like the last round...in November, I still have medicine from it, so I just started them. But is it more than allegies, cause my husband has this mess too..(this time)...he's been on the couch for two days now...

So..allegies aside, we believe we have caught the CRUDE...and thats what the doctors have called it here...What the hell is the CRUDE? You'd think with all thier education that they would have a different name for it...

I think I have the crude......cause I sure feel like crude.....

Nope. Not croup, and not crude. CRUD. It's kind of a low grade, annoying thing, that they hope will go away by itself, especially since they're not sure just what it is.

Possibly, a second opinion is in order. My coworker had it for years. A different doctor diagnosed it as a low level case of asthma, and treated it accordingly. It worked, and for the first time in years, she no longer sounds like a hog eating shortcake.

No..not the croup...Have had it before...that is annoying!

[email protected] hog huh?

Yea...there isn't really any fever with it, and it going away by itself at this point would be very welcome. Actually, Thursday night, I thought I had the flu...was achy and hurt all over, just sick...

The asthma thing is a maybe...I had childhood asthma. But outgrew it...

I know this is partly allegies...I have dealt with those for years...and have gotten down like this with them. But that cough and my throat is just different this time. I actually feel like someone has thier hand around my throat tying to choke me...squeezing me off...

I'm going to the doctor tommorrow...unfortnately, I don't have anyone to cover me at work, so I'm on my own till I can get the right medication down me...

When he tells me I have the Crud...I'm going to tell him to give me another name...lol

Here's some advice from a person who has waged war with her husband's sinuses for decades. Just don't go to any doctor. Go to an ENT specialist, preferably one connected with a teaching hospital. You need something more than an X ray. You need a CAT scan, which will give the doctor so much more information.

Be very careful of antibiotics. Many doctors hand them out like lollipops. They give you a broad spectrum antibiotic, and then figure, in more cases than not, it will do SOMETHING. Do you remember the old expression. "Let's throw it against the wall, and see what sticks"? That is exactly what the doctors do. The only way for them to know for sure, is to take a culture of the stuff coming out of your nose, and seeing exactly what little bug is causing you the grief. Most primary doctors will not take the time to do that.

My husband was, just this week, operated on for a fungal infection in his sinuses. In the last year, my husband had contracted some nasty staph infections, on his skin, and each time it was treated with heavy duty anti-biotics. The ENT guy manintains that the continued use of the antibiotics caused the fungal infection, which can only be treated by surgery.

Aww...Phoenix, thats awful. I hope all comes out great with your husband.

I have seen some doctors do just that, throw you an antibiotic and hope for the best.

I know I need to switch doctors, this one would probably give me anything I wanted. My question to him tommorrow is going to be..."If my sinuses were the WORST you have EVER SEEN, than why aren't we doing something to find out why they are so bad?" I didn't get the opportunity the last visit because I was being rushed out the door in a hurry so he could be off to his next patient. He wasn't like that in the beginning, but he's built a new complex and has over-run himself with the task of making it work. Nothing like being run through like a bunch of cattle.....through the shoots at a fast pace.

So, If I can get his attention tommorrow, without me having to change doctors and start all over, I'm going to talk to him about a few things.
I've used him for over 10 years now...

Yeah!!!

The point is, that if the guy that you are seeing is a primary doctor, G.P. or an internist, he is not equipped to deal with horrible sinuses. You need someone who sees your kind of sinuses all the time, and knows what to do with them.

Good luck!

I agree with Phoenix's comments on antibiotics and that you should see a allergy specialist.

I happen to know what the "crud" is - at least as used around my old med center working environs - the word is a casual reference to an upper respiratory system set of symptoms I think usually meaning infection, not allergy. I heard it used by our physicians, as in, "I'm coming down with the crud" and "He's got the crud"..

The word's use is a little bit like saying "germs" or "bugs", common language names for bacteria and viruses.

Well...ya'lls post make sense...cause I've been there done that with the upper respritory infections. And can tell as the day has progressed that...THATS exactly what this is turning into...

The coughing has progressed so much in a few hours...its unreal. I've been on the couch asleep some..but I can only stand that for so long....

And yes...Phoenix, he's an internist...

I think I will ask for a referral and see if we can get the allergy part under control. It seems the older I get, the worse its gotten.
