HDL/LDL what's it all about?

Reply Sat 19 Feb, 2005 11:14 am
Ok so I'm 60 years on and last week(for the first time) I had my blood teseted for LDL/HDl and today got back the results: HDL=45 LDL 152 Cardiac Risk Level 5.00. Will I die tomorrow or should I fill the gas tank on the Porsche?

although the normals and standards change all the time you want the ratio of your HDL (good cholesterol) and your total cholesterol to be less than 4.4. I don't know if they gave you your total cholesterol but we can estimate it from the sum of 45 and 152 to be 197. The Total/HDL ratio would be 4.4 - right at the limit of normal. What were your triglycerides? Did they do a c-reactive protein? All of these factors along with your age and gender go into determining your Cardiac Risk Level.

The physician who ordered the tests can pick out which factors are determining your risk.

What J_B said. Sounds like you're in pretty good shape cholesterol wise. But, doing a c-reactive test would be good.

ah yes Triglyc=226
and this, just the "cholesterol=242
plus I see this Glucose 81
Hemoglobin HGB= 18.6, HCT= 55.3

I think that's all I have on this results page.

The trigs and total chol are up some but I'm wary of giving you an interp of your 5.0 Cardiac Risk in case the one I'm familiar with isn't the one they used. The glucose is great (no signs of diabetes unless your urine showed sugar) and your H&H are a bit high - you might consider donating a unit of blood if you're otherwise able (see thread above) because sometimes people with a lot of red cells (the opposite of anemia) feel pretty good if they get rid of some of theirs. Here's a link for calculating Cardiac Risk and one interpretation of what it means, but your dr needs to explain if this is the one they were using.

All in all, you look pretty darned good.

Here is a nice, easy to understand explanation:

Just stop eating and drinking. Eventually, they won't be able to draw any blood, and everything will be fine.

cjhsa- Why didn't I ever think of that? I have always wished for a "slight touch" of anorexia. But it just does not seem to happen! Laughing

What did your physician say about the above data? Smile

The normals for each lab will vary, and thus it's not possible for an outsider to really be able to evaluate your numbers. Based on my knowledge of clinical chemistry, the numbers look good to me.

I thought the formula for calculating "risk" was:
1/3 triglyceride + HDL + LDL
