The Cascadia Region may be overdue for a earthquake of the kind that produced the Sumatra tsunami, according to some seismologists.
The last earthquake to produce a West Coast tsunami is believed to have occured about 1700.
If and when the next one occures,it could hit Papua New Guinea as well as Japan.
The last earthquake that produced a west coast tsunami was the "Good Friday" earthquake in Alaska in 1964. The tsunami hit BC Candada, Washington, Oregon and California.
Ummm.... that's Canada (not Candada)
Poking around I find that there have been tsunamis that effected the west coast in 1946 and in 1957 too.
I was at the beach one day when they tested the tsunami emergency broadcast system - not alarms, bells, sirens, anything like that - loudspeaker cow mooing. Very strange. Drove my dog batty for a few minutes.
