The flu vaccine is free to everyone in Ontario. The city I live in held a number (many many) of free clinics. A number of employers, including mine, set up clinics onsite, with the co-operation of the public health department.

Good idea, I think, if anyone's susceptible to the flu.

No concern here, Stradee. Just concerned that some folk still believe that the flu vaccine necessarily makes one feel ill.

g'day all,

sumac, some people do have an adverse reaction to the flu serum; redness, swelling or soreness from the needle, and slight fever, fatique, or muscle aches occur in some individuals.

Reason why the vaccine given employees at the end of the workweek
<oneword> <grin> instead of Monday.

Ever wonder why some shots 'sting' - while others don't?????

Next visit to the clinic when the shot 'stings' - just look at the injector and tell them to position the slanted part of the tip of the needle down next to the skin. Believe it or not, that makes all the difference between 'sting' and 'no sting'.....

In High School I worked for a Vet for my last two years in HS and continued another two years while attending a local Junior College. I gave lots of shots among other forms of assisting with various operations. The 'slant down' means a lot........

Danon, its been my experience that whether the shot stung or not depended upon the mood of the shotgiver <one word> and drawing that conclusion is the reason why i tough out the flu season without taking the vaccine.

nah, just bein' silly

Truth is, i'm allergic to some types of medication, and won't chance the side affects from the vaccine.

You worked for a vet? Neat job, Dan <smile>

Stradee,
My past experience with the Vet prepared me for something that happened while living at Gig Harbor, WA.
We had a duck - a Swedish Grey - that had been bitten by a dog, breaking it's wing. The local Vet refused to even look at it. I went to the local library and eventually found an operation for fowls called Pinioning. I got everything ready and performed the operation myself. The duck was quiet during the operation - probably thought it was duck soup already. After I finished the sutures and bandaging I placed him in a nice box for a day or two then let him out in a small pen. About two weeks later I glanced out the rear window and saw the duck try his first attempt at wing flapping since the operation. He only went round and round in a tight circle - grin. Minus one wing and all.
He led a long and fruitful life after that.

You lived in Gig Harbor, Danon? Trying to remember who lives there now....someone I should remember.

Stradee,
Flu shots. Sorry I responded so. Much ado about nothing, which I guess, was my point. I know too many people who should get the shots, but don't, for fear that the vaccine itself will give them the flu. It doesn't, and a small percentage of people have a slight, temporary reaction to the shot, I know. But the number of deaths per year in the US from the flu is too high not to get the shot, particularly as one ages and the risks become greater.

sumac, not too worry.

When I'm old and crikkety, I'll worry about the flu vaccine. <maybe>
Till then I plan staying healthy and not dieing quite yet. But thankyou for the excellent advise though.

Dan, ya shudda been a vet! <cool story>

ehBeth, thanks for the stats!

Hi, everyone...A Belated Happy Valentine's Day to you all!

Injections...I've been told that when I give them that they rarely hurt. Secret is to have the recepient in a relaxed state (coldcocking works good  ) don't use alcohol on the site - it's not necessary, but if you do want to use it, make sure that it's had a chance to dry before giving the shot, and use a gentle hand when inserting the needle instead of a heavy handed jab. Of course, a lot of the time the pain involved with an injection isn't caused by the technique itself so much as it is caused by the solution in the syringe. Some are much more irritating than others.

Hamburger, Piffka, I, and several others were involved in a thread about flu shots a while back, and I think we all agreed that when you get the flu shot you are not only getting it to protect yourself from a serious illness but you are also helping to protect others around you who are even more vulnerable to the flu such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, those with chronic conditions, ie. diabetes, heart conditions, etc., because if they get the flu it may very well kill them no matter their age. pnumonnia shots were also agreed to be of great advantage to people of all ages who want to stay healthy. I've had one, and had absolutely no reaction to it. I'm supposed to get one every five years for the rest of my life, although most people will only need to get the shot once. I'd rather get stuck with a needle than get the flu or pnumonnia ever again! Smile

I got some wonderful news today...because my son will be entering the Law School he will be attending this fall at the top of the class, they are giving him a renewable $10,000 a year schollarship! All he has to do is take a full load of classes, which he'd already planned on doing, and it's his. I haven't been able to wipe the smile off of my face all day (not that I'd want to!) so I'm feeling pretty good! Very Happy
