What Is Hell? Is It a Place of Eternal Torment?

Reply Fri 23 Mar, 2018 06:25 am
Some Bible translations use the word “hell” for the Hebrew word “Sheol” and the matching Greek word “Hades,” both of which refer to the common grave of mankind. (Psalm 16:10; Acts 2:27) Many people believe in a fiery hell, as shown in various religious artworks. However, does the Bible really teach this?

It's a fictional place pushed as real to control the masses.

@edgarblythe,
Exactly. It also paints the Creator as cruel and heartless. This is exactly what the devil would like people to believe. The only way to combat this is to show people in their own Bibles what it really teaches and then let them decide whether they want to continue believing the lie or accept what the Bible really teaches. Note for example the following texts that clearly expose this false teaching for what it is, a cruel lie about God.

The dead are unconscious and so cannot feel pain. “There is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol.”—Ecclesiastes 9:10.

Death, not torment in a fiery hell, is the penalty for sin. “He who has died has been acquitted from his sin.”—Romans 6:7.

Eternal torment would violate God’s justice. (Deuteronomy 32:4) When the first man, Adam, sinned, God told him that his punishment would simply be to pass out of existence: “Dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19) God would have been lying if he were actually sending Adam to a fiery hell.

God does not even contemplate eternal torment. The idea that he would punish people in hellfire is contrary to the Bible’s teaching that “God is love.”—1 John 4:8; Jeremiah 7:31.

Basically, hell is a state of mind arrived at by seeking heaven, which is another state of mind.

@anthony1312002,
If I could get a copy of the Bible, signed by the supposed author, after being ghostwritten by many writers, I might could sign on to some of that.

@coluber2001,
Actually the word Hell is not part of the original text. Sheol and Hades are the Hebrew and Greek terms used to refer to the common grave of mankind. Hell was not introduced until after the completion of the Bible and used as a transliteration of both Sheol and Hades. This has been behind the great confusion that exists on this subject.

But excluding this term and using only the original terms found in the text quickly dispels the confusion revealing that there is no burning place of torment. But rather a state or condition of complete non existence.

@anthony1312002,
Eternal Torment - If you disobey
Eternal prosperity - If you obey

Here's ONE line from my Newish verse. (2 lines, but 1)

Another angel, falls, from grace
Another babe, Another face

Make of it - Whatever you may...

The idea comes from passages such as Matthew 13:50, 2 Peter 2:9, etc.

@InfraBlue,
Thanks for the additional info. But I have a question, even though a fiery furnace is mentioned at Matthew, why should one conclude that this is talking about a fiery hell and not that it is simply talking about complete destruction from which there is no resurrection?

@anthony1312002,
There's also 2 Peter 2:9, among others, that reads, "The Lord hath known to rescue pious ones out of temptation, and unrighteous ones to a day of judgment, being punished, to keep."

@InfraBlue,
Yes, 2 Peter 2:9 does say that, and that is the truth. But how does this support eternal fire rather than just making it clear that eternal destruction is the end for all who oppose God?

Hell is a person with reason and a functioning conscience in the Trump cabinet, and, for them, a place of eviternal torment. Of course it wouldn't be eviternal, because they would soon be fired.

@anthony1312002,
2 Peter 2:9 doesn't refer to eternal destruction at all. It refers to a day of judgement for the unrighteous, punishment, and the keeping thereof.

@InfraBlue,
I understand. So what do the Scriptures say the destruction will consist of?

So are you saying that destruction and eternal torment are the same?
