I'm trying to create a faux family crest with the motto "None but the hard way." A friend suggested "Nulla via nisi ardua" but didn't trust his recollection of Latin. Is this good? Is there a better suggestion? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Works for me.
There is a well-known quote from Ovid that is very close.
I attempt a difficult work; but there is no excellence without difficulty.
Ardua molimur; sed nulla nisi ardua virtus.
My favorite on this theme:
Ad stra per aspera.
"To the stars through harsh things." (Sounds better in Latin.)
Nulla Nisi Ardua
Nulla Nisi Ardua is thought to be the original family motto of the old French d'Estampes de Vallencay family. The only query is when and which branch of the family first started to use it.
It is shown in writing on a scroll above the head of a unicorn which rises out of a crown.
The literal translation of the motto is "Nothing Without Difficulty"
