BillW, what you say is no doubt true.

I'd like to tell a story. Maybe 45 years ago I was sitting at a lunch table talking it up with some of my working chums. We were on the subject of whores. One guy, we'll call him Joe, had a motorcycle which his motorcycle racing brother had encouraged him to buy. The two of them anong with two other cyclists rode to a good sized town south west of Chicago where there was known to be bordello. Joe started to talk, slowly, and as if he were in awe of his subject, "We went in this place and there were several women we could choose from, but I saw this one who looked about my age. She had long blond hair, and a beautiful face an the most inviting smile. She took me to her room and she was so beautiful. The most beautiful thing I ever expect to see. Her skin was so white and clear.....I went back to that place two weeks later, but she was gone. If she'd been there, I think I would have asked her to marry me."

As Joe was talking, I was thinking to myself that he, in his mind, had completely romanticized his experience with this girl. He had projected upon her all the diserable traits that he had hoped to find there, or everything he imagined he wanted in a woman.

You can add to this that we sometimes like to think of a whore as the embodiment of the great, totally sexual woman that we imagine we'd like to embrase.

I think a lot of us men do this, and it accounts for many of the silly ideas we have about the "glamour and mystery" that sourrounds the profession.

We just hate to have to admit that for most of the people involved, prostitution is pretty sordid.

There are, of course, many exceptions to this. Human beings come in great variety. Luckily.

Hazlitt, what an interesting story. I wonder if that idealism of the prostitute by 'Joe' is a common reaction, or if it was outside the norm. It just seems terribly naive.

IMO, legalized protitution is the only way to truly make it a victimless crime (except for the fact that it would no longer be a crime), by providing proper medical care; otherwise, the customers can get STD's, some of them lethal.

There are some people who, for various reasons, can never have sex unless they pay for it with money: what should they do?

Definitely legal, then the law and its associates don't get their payoffs - I hate for society to unknowingly add to their corruption Smile

nelsonn, welcome aboard - for the ones that can only have fulfilling sex by paying for them, I advise them to find a source that will help them get a grip on life. Truly, it is okay to pay for it, to have a little excitement, but if it is the only way - there is a problem that needs to be uncovered!

Nelsonn, I reckon a guy like that had better pay for it if he wants it.

Diane, I'm not going to push the logic of my story any further. Like most theorys based on psychological ideas, this one can get to sound a little ridiculous after a while; however, that fact notwithstanding, I have always thought that this approach accounts for some of what goes on inside some men's heads.

I agree, in the best case scenario, prostitution ought to be legal, and prostitutes ought to be protected so they can work in peace, be happy with their chosen career, and have lots of satisfied Johns. This too is naive.

Even if prostitution is immoral, legalization is needed to put end to numerous abuses taking place in sex industries; I mean, forcing women into such an occupation, employment of minors by pimps, dealing of drugs in the brothels, etc. When prostitution becomes just a regular occupation, just like cooking or streets cleaning, criminal world will lose its grip on it, and there will be much less collateral crime.
The same things happen with gambling: in the countries where it is legal, it is just one of the possible entertainment businesses, and many hotel chains own casinos; where it is illegal (e.g., Israel), it becomes possessed by the organized crime and no regulations are possible.

Society has to change the way regulation is approached;
The criteria are at fault.

A "victim" should be defined by the degree of "choice" involved in their actions.
If someone chooses to be a victim of a specific act, for the purposes of some alternate fulfillment, and participates therein with full consent of the other participant(s), the applicable authorities should have no right to interfere.
If however this same activity, bears the stigma of abuse, whether from lack of consent, loss of control, second hand abuse (displaced victims), or other clearly defined social ills, then interference is merited.
Ethics and values are highly subjective, and yours should not be forced upon another.
But this requires unbiased sensitivity; we all owe our neighbours, our vigilance and support to protect them from actual abuse of any kind.
Admittedly a dificult distinction.
More effort and expense should be applied to social support resources, than punitive control institutions.

I married a former prostitute. From working out of a seedy hotel, where she was raped, beaten, and stabbbed, to working for a powerful, connected bussinessman as a private escort. She experienced the full spectrum on the streets in San Diego (early seventies.)

As in all things, there are the very successful ones, and those that fall into the depths of depravity.

Defining prostitution, is like defining "Pornography." what some view as filth, others see as Erotica (again, we are trying to discuss something without a clear definition.)

I would hope that the prostitution would be legalized and regulated.

COYOTE is an example of some of the girls, trying to help others.

The funniest is when guys think they are really pleasuring, or try to pleasure the prostitute. This idiot I know who talks about his experiences was telling us how "he was the best ever" for her.

F'n moron. Get a clue.

And one time, "this guy" made the prostitute dress up in a duck costume, and quack while having sex with him.

What a freak.

I took a class "Abnormal Psychology" in college. One of my favorite classes ever. While class was going on, I'd be reading case studies in the book about these people who had problems with sex/relationships. One guy couldn't keep a girlfriend, and couldn't get aroused by normal sexual activity. He used to pay a prostitute, to beat him while naked(he was naked, not her) with a rolled up newspaper while he masturbated. It was the only way this guy could get off. Found out he watched his dad beat his older brother with a rolled up newspaper as a small child, and it traumatized him that much.

Of course, I found it funny.
