As we cruised into Grytviken.
Our Zodiak landed on the left side of this bay where we first visited Shackleton's grave. We walked deeper into the bay towards the church which is located in the center of the picture. The walk then continued on the right side of the church towards the museum which is located in front of the big tanks. The museum also includes a small gift shop where many purchased souvenirs. The museum is interesting for it's artifacts and pictures from it's past - including a large picture of Shackleton. The walk then proceeded towards the cross on the right side on a small hill where there are fur seals. One chased me, and I had more energy than I though possible... The naturalists and ship staff were there with long sticks to keep the seals away from us humans, but it wasn't 100-proof protection when walking solo (as I often do). The cross is a memorial to Shackleton, but not all the visitors to Grytviken walked the total distance from the grave to the cross. It was quite an experience for our few hours at Grytviken.
Six more for today. This is the HMS Shackleton cruising into Grytviken.
Thousands of penguins at Gold Harbor, South Georgia.
Seals playing around ice floe.
Returning to the Marco Polo on the Zodiak at Gold Harbor.
Approach to Drygalski Fjord in South Georgia. Our Captain told us this was the very first time in ten tries that he was able to sail to the end of the Drygalski Fjord. On one occasion, he was able to go half way, but had to turn around when the water and wind got too strong to navigate safely.
All are so beautiful, but I loved the one of the penguins wishing you bon voyage as you left Grytkiven.
The photo of seals playing around seal-shaped ice is very pleasant. It must be a rare chance to catch such amusing scenes.
satt_fs, It was for us. We just happened onto these two creatures while waiting our turn to get back onboard our ship from the Kodiak. I even used up some of my digital camera memory to get some video. These little experiences made our trip extra-ordinary, and from what we've heard from other passengers that have made this trip many times, we've done more on one sailing to Antarctica than many have done in ten. The weather was exceptionally good to us.
