jjorge, you're obviously not into serious, dangerous, thrill-seeking procrastination!!! (But very sensible, though! Very Happy )

Today, What day is it again???? Confused
Monday? What happened to Sunday? I think I must have put it on hold & forgotten about it! I've procrastinated so much, about every conceivable thing this Easter, that I feel I'm in some time warp! Confused

When I was in my twenties I used to run my car on empty all the time.
Many many times I would be driving up the highway on my way to one engagement or another, 'white knuckled' with my gas gauge BELOW empty.
I was in therapy at the time and, as you might imagine THAT little pattern
gave us plenty to talk about!
(eg. 'virtuosity' - needing to prove that I was clever enough to get out of any jam I got myself into)
My current (fairly minor) procrastination is all that remains of that earlier neurotic shite. It's probably the irreducible residue.

I thought I'd mention that I still haven't pressure washed the porch. I was going to do mention it last weekend but it got away from me. It's so much trouble to move everything and then what a mess of water all over. ick

I think the root of much of our procrastination is protest.

That is, protest of the multitude of tasks we have to do . . . including the care and keeping of much unnecessary "stuff".

That's why I am so fond of Thoreau and why I have been trying to follow his injunction:

'Our life is frittered away by detail . . . Simplify, simplify.' *

That makes sense... most forms of being late (and procrastinating is being late, right?) are a passive-aggressive stance against performance, so being late in any way is a protest. But I really do want to pressure wash my porch so I can paint it.

The idea is that it's not this or that specific task that one is protesting but the accumulated weight of ALL the tasks.

Also, if you reflect, you may find that, unlike the pressure-washing job, there are some tasks that you see much more negatively ie. as thankless, unnecessary, etc etc

Finally, the 'protest' may not be simply about the task itself, but may involve the perception that one is doing more than one's share, should have help, shouldn't be the one to have to do the task etc.

PS
No specific response is necessary here.
I only mean to talk about the concept of procrastination as 'Protest' NOT to put you on the spot to self-analyze for us!

Not to worry, Joanne, you'll do it (easily!) when the spirit moves you ... Besides, moving homes is an exhausting business (I know, I know ..! Confused ) You need time to adjust & "bond" with your new place.

You've just reminded me that I've put a coating on all the outdoor decking, which I'd planned to do in the summer! ..With winter fast approaching, I'd better get moving!
Good luck with the porch!

What is it about computers? They were made for avoiding anything unpleasant we SHOULD be doing .. That's my theory, anyway! Very Happy

MsOlga -- You're so nice -- I hope you can get the deck covering done and I WILL work on my porch. When Jjorge pointed out that I was avoiding something beyond the work itself, I realized that I was avoiding making my 18 year old son help me, even though he was asked to help and knows how to work the pressure washer and can lift it up the stairs. SO, I've just finished getting an agreement with him that he would help me this week. It took some doing but if he does agree (and you're looking him straight in the eye) he will follow through. Maybe I'll be able to paint this weekend???

Rae -- Good luck looking for a new job. That is really hard, but you can do it!
