How does becoming a doctor work?

Reply Thu 20 Jan, 2005 08:59 pm
I met this girl in my italian class tonight, and she said she is a physician. Then she said she's in her third year, but she's not actually a physician yet. That means she's a resident, right?

And how old would a cute girl be if she was in her third year of residency? How much longer until she's a full-blown physician?

I didn't ask her any questions about it, because I didn't want to look like an ignorant ass. What would be some good questions to ask a cute girl who is in her third year of residency? If you guys could help me out, I might have a chance at getting in this babe's scrubs.

Thanks.

errr, well the only thing i know about residents is that they usually don't have a lot of free time

oh, and they're science nerds

and don't necessarily have great social skills

but that's just my experience

but if you want one, go for it. maybe cute blonde's another kind of resident

she probably wouldn't be a resident yet. she must be only in medical school. which she has 5 years of, after college. after med school, she becomes M.D. -- a physician. Then she goes into residency - from five to six or seven years, depending on specialty. then she gets a license, becomes 'board certified', then she might do another fellowship or two in her specialty. by the time she's done with training, she will be ready to retire. the Monster (ex of 8 years) is 35 now and has another year of fellowship ahead of him. but your girl could be, ummm, 25, 26? ask her if she's 24, she'll be flattered.

Quote:
It takes many years of education and training to become a physician: 4 years of undergraduate school, 4 years of medical school, and 3 to 8 years of internship and residency, depending on the specialty selected. A few medical schools offer a combined undergraduate and medical school programs that last 6 rather than the customary 8 years.

Kicky- Med school is 4 years. If she is in her third year, she is not yet a physician. She had to college for 4 years. If she started at 18, and graduated at 22, she would now be 25, give or take a year or so.

Dag, what do you mean, commitment freaks? Was it that they were afraid to commit, or that they wanted to commit too much?

Oy, don't talk to me about med-school chicks! Ok, do. I have lived with 2 of them. Maybe tomorrow when I'm sober I can articulate why I don't think they'd be good to go out with.

Dag - we continue the 2-week birthday party tomorrow night in Arlington, but maybe after dinner and the-shooting-of-the-cat, I can meet you out. We'll have to talk.
