Our first stop was the City Opera Thrift Shop. There is a little bit of everything. There are treasures to be found like authentic Puccis. They usually go for about $7,000 dollars and here they go for $350 dollars. There are also signature Oscar de La Rente pieces, part of his original collection. The best part of this East Side find...

Paul Wasmund, City Opera Thrift Shop: "All net proceeds of the operation go to support young singers and productions in New York City opera at Lincoln Center."

Let's head across town to The Family Jewels. Lillyan Peditto travels the country buying pieces for her vintage shop. There are things she loved to wear as a teenager and Pucci makes a repeat appearance or a look a like for about $70 dollars. There are also day dresses from the 1920's along with hats and hand painted skirts. Strolling through the store is like flipping through a history book.

Now it is time to go North. At the turn of the century, Laura Fluhr's family had already set up shop in Lower Manhattan and was thriving and now she is carrying on the tradition at Michael's which is her consignment store.

Laura Fluhr, Michael's: "We have women in their 70's and 80's who've been shopping with us since they were young career people in New York and we now have their granddaughters who are just getting started."

Specializing in high-end designers, the prices are anything but that. There are Chanel suits starting at $650 dollars that would normally go for about $4000 dollars and you might consider looking here for your wedding dress. One dress was $1800 dollars but in stores it would be $7000 dollars.

Why not? Have you tried calling them directly? It's the best way.

The Gates will be taken down in February, so I won't be able to see this installation in person.

Lola, I'll try to give them a call early tomorrow. I was trying to book through the hotel's website. If it (calling) doesn't work, I think I'll book at the Gershwin.

(hmmmm, I'd better take another look at it before I get too wound up)

None of my business, but -- while you're thinking, take a look at the reviews both hotels get on Fodors.com.

Good idea, bree.

Gershwin is a Fodor's pick, though Pickwick Arms has a slightly higher user rating (though neither would make it on anyone's dream list)

Thanks for the suggestion.

Well, that would definitely be a consideration for ehBeth, Kicky (although exactly how it would factor into her decision, I'm sure I couldn't say).

I was coming back to ask if you've considered the Hotel Belvedere, on West 48th Street. I don't have any first-hand knowledge of it (other than having walked past it), but people on both Tripadvisor and Fodor's speak highly of it.

A theater suggestion: "The Musical of Musicals - The Musical!" It's a very funny show, in which the same story is told five different times, each time in the style of a different musical composer (Rodgers and Hammerstein, Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, etc.). I saw it off-off-Broadway last year, and it's just about to re-open at Dodger Stages, a new off-Broadway theater on West 50th Street. I don't know if you're a musicals fan, but it's the kind of show that you appreciate more, the more you know about musicals. The website for the show is:

Official website for "The Musical of Musicals -- The Musical!"

The Belvedere looks great, but with the conversion rate it would be about $500 Canajun more than staying at the Pickwick Arms or the Gershwin. That's some significant lunch money. Shocked

I can't argue with that. Another thought: have you looked at what's available on Quikbook on your dates? I know that (as has been previously pointed out on this thread) you can often do just as well by calling the hotel directly, but Quikbook might give you some suggestions you wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

hehehehe

I just 'heard' that.

I'll look at Quikbook tonight, and see what's hiding in there. Thanks, Bree. Planning camping trips is a lot easier than this.

Pretty sure it's gonna be the Gershwin, kix. I think I might be able to see the floor in the "petite" room. Waiting a couple more days to find out if (how much) of a bonus I'm getting this year. I may splurge and get a room where I can walk around the bed!

(already checking out the candy stores, lookin' for contents for my traditional goodie bags)
