I'm kind of stunned.

I've been saying that I'd go back to NYC for about 30 years - but I always managed to find a reason not to. I told mrs. hamburger I needed to book the ticket now - or I'd waffle out again.

Now back to the front of the thread for those hotels ...

This is the sort of snow that glaciers are made of.

I shovelled my glacier. I'll take my shovel to NYC if I have to.

Congratulations, Beth! It's always a big step to get those plane tickets. <doing small joy dance for ya>

I checked around a little for that hotel, thinking Hotels.com (which is usually so good) would have the best price... but no. So far online, the cheapest nights are from the hotel website itself, plus it says you can sign up for special deals.

It would be cool to have a view of Washington Square.

When I first booked for the SF a2k meeting, I picked a place, and eventually cancelled, since the date was changed and then I found a good deal at the Adagio. Anyway, I contacted the first hotel itself instead of Hotels.com, in order to cancel, and the guy at the hotel said, next time just ask us. We can give you a better deal.

ehBeth, check out the reviews of the Washington Square Hotel on tripadvisor.com:

Washington Square Hotel - reviews on tripadvisor

The reviews are all over the map, which probably isn't very helpful, but there they are, for what they're worth.

There used to be a very nice restaurant called CIII (Roman numerals for 103, as in 103 Waverly Place, the hotel's address) in the ground floor of the hotel, where I used to eat lunch back when I worked near Washington Square (and where I once saw Quentin Crisp having lunch), but I seem to remember hearing that the restaurant has changed hands since then, so I can't vouch for whatever is there now.

Thanks for the input - I'd noticed those all over the place reviews - wondered if anyone was familiar with the place. It's one of the options in one of the more interesting weekend packages I've been mulling over. Hotel, coupla meals, and choice of walking tours and either a play or a dance performance. I've sent the package group an email for more details on what the single supplement would be.

Mulling.

ebeth : as ossobuco said also check with the hotel directly and ask for "the best rate" . if it is not better than internet offer you might want them to know what offer you have. since they'd have to pay commission to the provider, they may want to make a better offer or provide an upgrade (that's what the travel magazines claim anyway). i've noticed that some hotels provide 'internet specials' for anyone booking directly; always worth a try. you can also try and ask for free 'weekend breakfast' - usually works in toronto. hbg

The next time I'm in NYC and the weather is balmy, I'm going to explore:

Memorial gardens touch my imagination.

oooh, thanks for that link, Noddy. I'm a fan of labyrinth walking.

You'd like my hometown (where hamburger posts from). They even have memorial parking lots. That town'll memorialize anything.

I'm waiting for the corn maze people to invade the ski slopes and tramp mazes into the snow.

I'm pretty sure that's already been done.
At least north and west of here.

sorry Beth, I've been busy every minute last week at the American Psychoanalytic Association meetings at the Waldorf. The meetings were great and non stop (except for a short time for sleeping and sometimes not much of that) and now I have to get back to work. But I'm checking a2k to see what's going on.

Congratulations on your ticket purchase.

I agree with Osso and Hamburger. I found out that you can get a better deal with any hotel directly and cancellations or changes in dates etc are easier if you've dealt with the hotel directly.

I'm not familiar with the Washington Square Hotel. It certainly is well located. If I get a chance, I'll drop by there if I'm in the neighborhood as I may be sometime this week and at least check out the lobby. I could also ask to see a room and see what I can see. I'm not sure I'll be in the Village, but I may well be. I'm having guests all week and they're going to want to be getting around the town.

If I get any information, I'll let you know.
