Thomas, so sorry we didn't get to connect. I had series of bad luck, which is still continuing. Still, it was a pleasant weekend.
Not only did my cell phone battery die (and it's not that I forgot to bring the charger. I didn't bring it cause my battery used to last 5 days no problem.Apparently it doesn't anymore), my friend's internet router went kaput yesterday. I tried to leech off of neighbors, but it never lasted long enough. Gah. Today, when she and I parted and I was headed to take an early bus to Boston, I found out all buses were stopped until tomorrow morning due to blizzards and stuff. So I rushed to Penn Station, fearing that everybody else was about to do the same, and sure enough. All trains are sold out for hours. I got one for 3:15am. So I'm sitting in some sort of a burrito place (free wi-fi, yay!), spent last 4 hous in a sports club (yay boston sports club that lets you use clubs in new york!) - enjoyed steam room and sauna for forever and now am headed for a movie. That should bring me to about midnight and then it';s not that long more to wait. Except I'll have no sleep and I have to run around tomorrow like a madwoman, taking care of everything that needs taking care of before I go home for 3 weeks - on tuesday. Oy. Oh well. If it won't kill me, it will make me stronger.
Arrrrgh! I left New York with the 9:01 pm train out of Penn Station. We probably missed each other by a few dozen yards and didn't even know it!
That's too bad, but I'll try to catch up with you when you're back. My younger sister, who used to work in Boston as an intern and whose best friend still lives there, adores the city. She is frequently urging me to visit both Boston and the friend. This seems like a good project for a January weekend, and a good opportunity to see you, too. Please let me know which weekend seems convenient, if any.
Sorry to hear about your string of bad luck. I hope you'll have a good night anyway, or at least a not-completely-shîtty night. Enjoy Bratislava, your family, and the three weeks away from your chaotic boss! You've earned it.

That's Witold Rybcznski on the proposed designs for making much of governors' island into a park (article has slide show). I've looked at the proposals quickly, n'sure which if any I like, speaking as one who hasn't been there.
Now there's a plan chosen - the Dutch firm West 8, Diller & Scofidio & Renfro, et al.

I'm a bit sad that the Coast Guard buildings will be destroyed. I'd hoped that they'd be able to save some of them, re-use them. They've got some amazing history there.
The promenade will be brilliant.
I'm really looking forward to going back to Governor's Island. It really adds something to the whole New York experience.
I particularly regret that circular stockade--even ruined it had great charm.
..A bit odd in that Diller and Scofidio et all have in the past gotten into at least some reuse in their designs.
I have failed to study the plan yet, laggard that I am. Back later.
I just had to jump in here to report on my newest favorite NYC eatery... Veselka on 2nd ave in the Village. Wowsa, a Ukranian diner, very reasonably priced, with generous portions of absolutely wonderful foods.
Mrs Lion, her lovely friend Miss N, and I had veal goulash, stuffed cabbage, pierogis, and potato pancakes.
I wonder if I can convince them to open a second location in NC ?
Five days ago, the New York Times
ran an article about 78th street on the Upper East Side that some in this thread may find interesting.

I, of course, never liked 78th street; I am pointing to this article merely to exterminate any homesickness that might have crept up in Blatham and Lola.
One favourite, LTX? I'm lucky if I can get the short list down to 8 or 10.
(will try and compare Veselka on the next trip)
And when you compare it to the Ukrainian East Village restaurant? (Since that's the only one I know around there, and which I highly recommend!)
(My Canadian lead walker took me there  )

And a classy street it is. Even down at our end next to the abattoir and used hubcap entrepreneurs.
So, as noted earlier (I think) Lola and I will be in New York for 10 days (I think) beginning the 10th (I think). Lola does the agenda stuff (as you might well think). Hoping to see everyone other than frankapisa and kickycan whose constant kissing and fondling I find discomfiting.

Paul Giamatti

I was standing outside of Veselka, waiting for a table. There were a couple scraggly dudes outside smoking and hamming it up. The one with a beard turned out to be Paul Giamatti. His shoes looked well-worn and he was wearing way too many earthtones. He soon returned to his table of six or seven dudes to eat pierogis.
LTX appears to be a bit of a trend-setter. Did Giamatti read about Veselka here?

Metzgete at Trestle on Tenth
Dear friends of Trestle on Tenth,
Please come and join us for our first-ever metzgete any night from Tuesday, January 15 through Sunday, January 20. It will be a special offering in addition to our full dinner menu.
So, what is a metzgete? Loosely translated as "a butcher's affair", it is a very traditional Swiss celebration of the pig, customarily offered at country restaurants throughout Switzerland during the cold months. The metzgete follows right on the heels of the slaughter, which happens in late fall & deep winter, and originated as a way to use every scrap of the pig--especially those parts that would or could not be dried, smoked or pickled for later consumption. Resembling the choucroute garnie of neighboring Alsace, the dish starts with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes and is then heaped with all kinds of pork.
Next week at Trestle, our version will include everything from braised belly to homemade bratwurst to liver and blood sausages, for only $24 per person (it can be served family-style for a group). We would suggest pairing the metzgete with a glass of Switzerland's most notable white wine, Chasselas, or a bottle of artisanal Swiss beer, both of which will be available as options as always.
We look forward to sharing with you a true Swiss experience in a modern American setting.
Ralf and the Trestle on Tenth team
Trestle on Tenth is located on the corner of 10th Avenue and 24th Street, (right side, far corner) across the street from the future High Line Park in Manhattan's West Chelsea art district.

apologies from blatham and lola to all the new york mates who we couldn't visit with over the last two weeks because we was very sickish. We developed a virus of a particularly nasty sort and we didn't wish to pass it on.
Joe nation, kicky, frank, thomas, High Seas...sorry guys...really wanted to see you.
We're back home now and healing but still not quite up to snuff.
Lotsa love to both of you... Get well soon!
We need some help from all of you. We have Bernie's interview this Feb. 6 and we need to accumulate as many photos of Bernie and I together in one photo as we can get. Oddly we're having trouble finding very many with us both. If anyone has one or some or if they know on which thread they can be found, please email Bernie. It's his name plus 77 at hotmail.com And we'll keep you all informed of the result. Thanks
