One died in a terrible highway accident. I refuse to pay rental for the movie now unless it is 2/3 the previous rate.

While I'm a diabetic, some things are just worth dying for. This cake looks as if it's one of them. When are you coming to Munich?

A lot closer than it is to Berlin. You just go east until you start to sink into the whipped cream . . .

Five to six hours by train. I'd be happy to meet you in Vienna if and when you're there.

If all goes well and the fates are kind, I'll be in NYC sometime in January.

Beth, Clearly trying to reach each other by phone once your here isn't gonna work. I think we need to make a plan before you get here.

We've got time. We'll talk.

As for chocolate cake. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. And the one in the photo. Double mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I'll remember what I've learned about your circadian rhythms, Roberta.

Another drop-off for June '07.

When It's Time for a Bite in the Gallery District

Quote:
Marcey Brownstein, who has been a caterer for seven years, has opened Brownstein's, a takeout shop at 557 West 23rd Street (10th Avenue) at the far western edge of the art gallery district. The airy shop with marble counters specializes in breakfast pastries, including unusual berry- and custard-filled brioches ($3); hot and cold sandwiches; salads; and more substantial dishes like potato gratin ($7.95), served with a salad. You can't go wrong with olive-oil-cured fresh tuna with romaine lettuce and aioli on ciabatta ($8.95) or grilled miso-marinated portobello mushrooms with edamame purée on focaccia ($7.95).

You can also pick up jars of colorful homemade jams, above, and conserves, pickles and syrups. The assortment includes figs with grappa, candied kumquats, quince syrup and Meyer lemon jam, which can embellish everything from morning toast to evening foie gras: most are $10 each. Brownstein's is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; (646) 624-2244.

Brioche and a giant tea. I could dig it.

Sounds loverly, Beth. A bit of a schlep for me, but a definite possibility. We've got time. Let's put it at the top of our list.

My planned visit is ... Chicago until June 4, then NY until 13th, besides two days in Boston inbetwen.

And I'm glad that I know, schmooze is nothing to be ashamed of afterwards
