Prince--

Bad timing for me, too.

You are just an Elusive Man in Great Demand.

No, but I like to watch the water taxis going to and fro as I sit on a bench on the river walkway with my book, which is how I've been spending my lunch hours recently.

Hi bree! I like watching the water taxis here as well.

When we had our company harbour cruise here last week, I started wondering if I could use the NY water taxis just to 'visit' - then checked the website - and there are tourist as well as commuter packages/plans.

I think it could be kinda entertaining.

Hi Ehbeth and others here

I wish to know if Saturday is a public holiday in the US. I ask this cuz I haven't yet received any replies to emails sent to various American Universities yesterday (Its now Sunday in India).

Hey, Bree...

...how come you haven't joined the NY crew at the Frying Pan yet?

Bree, you've gotta go to The Frying Pan.

Adult beverages, the river, and the company of some verra verra entertaining A2K'rs - and all of the other folks Frank pulls into the group - it's a winning combo.

spidergal, I'm in Canada, enjoying my Canada Day long weekend, so I don't know the U.S. holiday schedule - other than they'll be celebrating on Tuesday.

I do know that you wouldn't get a response from a Canadian university to a request made on a Saturday or Sunday til sometime the next week.

Seems like most of the Frying Pan gatherings have been on evenings when I've had a piano lesson or some other conflict. My schedule frees up a lot in the summer, so maybe I can join you one night soon. I'll watch this space.

I would suspect that many American universities are offering their employees a long holiday weekend. The official Independence Day holiday is on Tuesday, but many organizations will also be closed on Monday, allowing for a long four-day holiday weekend.

Does spidergal mean today (July 1st) or next Saturday?

On second thought, Saturday is never a holiday in the USA (someone correct me if you can think of one.) It's too sacred a day for the simple national holiday designation. Saturday is the day of the week that NCAA College Football games are played and when the Oklahoma Sooners are on the field with the Nebraska Cornhuskers the universe slows to a halt, planets aline themselves into appropriate letter shapes and God rests his head on his hands and stares at what he hath wrought.

Hmmm. Water taxis. We take the Weehauken Ferry over to Arthur's Landing a couple of times a year. At sunset the city of New York is bathed in golden light and is a stunning sight to see.

I've done the Circle Line round the island tour a couple of times. It's fun and the guides are usually informative and funny. It can be crowded though with lots of families with semi-bored kids.

Mostly we take the water taxis to get somewhere rather than do the tours.

Hey Frank, tell them about the Jazz tours on the water.

Nancy and I go on two or three jazz cruises on the Hudson each year. A local jazz radio station sponsors them.

The cruises are two hours actually cruising (a half to three-quarters of an hour in dock having an excellent dinner) and costs less than $100 per person.

Normally we cruise down past the Statue...then up the East River under the Brooklyn Bridge...back around up Manhattan Island to about mid-town...then dock at a berth right next to where the Frying Pan is docked.

Terrific time...great music...always delightful company.

For about $15 bucks you can get a day pass on the Water Taxi...and spend as much time on the water as you want.

Nice boats...always filled with lots of tourists.

(Even if New Yorkers like Joe use 'em as taxis...just to get to someplace!!!)

Mybe we should try it. We need to recreate more. I'm off to Florida on Friday for 8 days. But when I return, maybe Bernie and I can come meet you at the Frying Pan.

I'll be in town this Friday. If anyone wants to get together...I'm available. I think Tony is meeting me at the Pan about 6:30. I'll be in town from early afternoon on.
