The Greatness of Canada

Reply Fri 14 Jan, 2005 10:02 am
This thread has been created to appreciate the many fine things Canada has brought forth into the world and to discuss the greatness that is Canada.

I would like to start by thanking Canada for the excellent beer. I regularly have Labatts and Molson in my refrigerator. Canadian Beer is most excellent. I have actually driven to Canada for no other reason than to bring home a couple cases of Molson.

I would also like to thank Canada for William Shatner. I like him and think he is a wonderful person and actor.

Hockey. A shame money has taken my hockey season away from me, but the AHL is still active around here with the Syracuse Crunch. Thank you Canada for Hockey.

I would also like to thank Canada for my good friends in Guelph and Toronto. Truly great people.

Canada holds itself to many high standards of social welfare and international foriegn policy. The world could learn quite a bit following Canada's lead.

I know that whenever I have travelled in the US, I had a tough time finding Canadian beer...especially in the south.
I tried to figure out where McG's Emerald City was to perhaps plan my next vacation accordingly (so I could have Canadian beer)...but this is all I could find out about the location.
Emerald City

...which explains a lot.
(just pokin' back McG  )

Bob and Doug McKenzie. Paul Shaffer. Gordon Lightfoot.

Personally, I think the sign of a good bar is that it has Molsen Golden on tap, eh.

And the "Emerald City" is in Oz .. which everyone knows is in Kansas, eh.

(Edited to add the "ehs" for the sake of realism)

No, no,no, not that Emerald City, but the one from Oz. Which is not in Kansas, but New York. Referring of course to the birth place of the author. We even get a nice little parade full of little people and fireworks every year.

Wait a minute! Dorothy Gale lived in Kansas. You expect me to believe that when her house flew over the rainbow, she landed in New York? I find that hard to believe.

Seven out of the past eight years Canada has been ranked number one by the United Nations in their annual Human Development Index. By combining factors such as the cost of living, adult literacy, job opportunities, life expectancy and school enrollment, the UN determines the Canadian standard of living to be among the highest in the world.

Canada currently ranks 3rd behind Norway and Sweden. The US ranks 6th. For the last decade Canada has been ranked as a better place to live than America and for most of that time Canada has been ranked as the best place to live in the world!

All three of Canada's largest cities are rated in the top ten best cities in the world to live in? Vancouver (my home town) tied for 1st as the best city in the world to live in. Toronto was rated fourth, and Montreal was rated eighth. (ratings by 'Economy' magazine)

Best score in the US was held by Honolulu at 21st.
Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, and Cincinnati tied for 34th.
Cleveland, Houston, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh tied for 39th.
San Francisco scored 44th.
Seattle (three hours drive from the best city in the world) scored 49th.
New York scored 52nd.
Detroit Scored 54th.

Are you in Syracuse McG?

http://www.literarytraveler.com/spring/west/baum.htm

Do we know who stands behind this classic and how it came to be? Have we ever heard of L. Frank Baum or his life story? As one might expect, L. Frank Baum was a fascinating person who had a wonderfully interesting life; an intricate journey of twists and turns, some good and some bad, perhaps metaphorically similar to his characters' journey through Oz. The Wizard of OZ has been one of my all time favorite movies, to which I believe I am not alone. With this impetus, I wanted to discover who was "The Wizard of OZ," the man behind the curtain, by shedding some light on the shadow cast upon L. Frank Baum by the film his work inspired.

Born Lyman Frank Baum in 1856, just east of Syracuse in Chittenango, NY. He never used his first name since he preferred Frank. A rather sickly child who was both timid and shy, he kept to himself and made up imaginary places and playmates since he had to refrain from any kind of strenuous exercise due to his faulty, weak heart. Throughout Frank's life, his health was a constant impediment, which became a looming presence and a major controlling factor. Although, it never impeded his creativity, drive and talent.

That's the place Panzade.

I find it interesting that even in a thread discussing the greatness of Canada the US is still in the discussion for comparisons. I wonder why Walter would not list some of the German or French cities in his list? Seems he would be more interested in where they rate in the list than where cities in the US rate.

Shouldn't this thread be called "Canada is the greatest country in the history of the Universe"?

Oh Canada!!!!

Our largest and best trading partner. We share a common history and still share the largest unprotected boarder in the WORLD! I may not agree with their politics, but their politics is none of my business. The Canadians seem to support it and that is all that matters.

Personally, I have been to Canada many many times and find the people (short of a few French Canadians) to be the friendliest people around. I have traveled through Nova Scotia and it is beautiful. Toronto is one of the best cities I have ever been to as is Vancouver.

I also (surprise) work for a large Canadian Company in the US and I see a stark difference in the management style between it and American companies. It seems MERIT and BOTTOM LINE and INTEGRITY are most important. In their view, shareholder value will increase based upon performance, not "fancy accounting".

Regardless of any political differences "created" by the politicians, my guess is that every American will do anything to help and defend our cousins to the North.

Vancouver is Walters hometown??? My word!
#1.
Agreed, of all the cities I have been to...except the cost of living is....up in the stratosphere.
And downtown, the ravages of heroin addiction are everywhere.

Wo, your point about Canadian management...well made.

Honolulu, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and Cleveland scored higher than San Francisco ??????? RAFLMAO

Another wonderful achievement by the bold, intelligent, uncorruptable bureaucrats of the UN.
