About 4 years back after 2 years of being in serious discomfort I worked out I was lactose intolerant.

Anybody else suffering?Found any good substitutes?

I am mildly intolerant of lactose. I'm not a big fan of milkanyway. I can eat most cheese (hard cheeses and feta, cheddar too. But, not provolone, mozzerella or ricotta so much) and yogurt. I use almond milk with calcium, A and D added in my cereal. Soy makes me almost as gassy as milk does,

Have you tried lactaid pills? Or lactaid milk?

I have found mock cheese which has no taste but the same kind of consistency and dairyfree milk called 'So Good'which is the best milk substitute Ive found.

Cheesecake was my favourite pudding but sadly it will never pass my lips again.
I have found cheese free pizza is just as nice as with cheese.mmmmm.

I darent even try dairy to see if its become milder.
My symptoms were -
dizzyness
deafness
clicking in my ears
stabbing stomach pains
and windyness.

yowza! Was it a sudden reaction? How old were you when it happened?

You haven't even tried yogurt? It's probably just as well if you had that serious a problem.

Soy cheeses can be retty ok. Was the cheeseless pizza made by a company called Amy's?

I have never heard of a reaction like that. You might be allergic rather than intolerant.

I am lactose intolerant, and just how intolerant varies from time to time. Depending on what exactly the food is and how much I ate that day before, etc....I take lactaid pills but they don't always help. I have an easier time with hard cheeses than I do chocolate and milk and what not. I CANNOT eat yogurt. ?? Don't know why.

It sucks.
I can eat it in moderation but it still sucks. I use Lactaid milk. I take calcium supplements. Yeeha.

I empathasize with you. It is unfortunate and unfair.

Im in the UK,A pizza delivery company called Domines Pizza seem to be ok with people ordering cheesefree pizza.

Luckily I wasnt a huge fan of yoghurt or ice cream tho I have found a nice ice cream substitute, havnt looked for yoghurt tho.

Erm, I think it crept up on me.Its hard to say when it started, I think whe I was about 24(Im 29 now)I started to feel a bit odd but i eat badly anyway so I thought it was that. Then when the dizzyness and stomah cramps got too bad I went to the doctor thinking I had IBS.
What I was given didnt help, obviously then just by chance I read an article in a daily paper about cutting out dairy, Id try anything at that stage.
The first day I cut it out I felt a heck of alot better.
My breakfast was cereal with milk so it set my stomach up each day to hurt me.But I cut it out and Im alot better.Hoorah!!

Still a bit windy tho but Im assuming everybody has that. I also am very weary of what I eat if im not sure whats in it.

How did it effect you?

I get "windy" (i love that...makes it sound so much better than what it actually is) if I eat any dairy, even with a Lactaid pill. How windy and stinky I get depends on how much I eat. I get cramps, throw up, the hershery squirts, gas, bloating.....you name a gasterointestinal ailment, i prolly get it.

Yeah, I'm lactose intolerant.

Everyone is lactose intolerant to a certain degree - people process lactose at a certain rate.

Even lactose intolerant people can process lactose - but their rate is considerably slower that most people's. In a study, lactose intolerant people can drink an entire glass of milk without problem if they sip it very slowly throughout an entire day.

I find that I can eat yogurt (most of the lactose is pre-digested)
and I eat small amounts of milk like on a cheeseburger,
and occasionally I'll eat iced cream with ultra-lactaid pills (make sure they aren't expired or they won't work.) It's still unpleasant, but not as bad. Occasionally, you've just got to have a little ben & Jerry's.,

Yep,wind is a pain in the ar*e(no pun intended)
Over Christmas it was awful as I was overdosing on the chocolates, horeradish sauce(which had a bit of cream in it)Sour cream and chive Pringles(with lactose)
One night I nearly completely replaced the air supply with my own air brand.

Lovely....

I use "silk" (the original soymilk red-boxed, non-vanilla flavor) as a milk substitute in most recipees, and I eat it with cereal. I don't like cooking with those sickly-sweet vanilla kinds. It goes especially well with "Special K. with red berries."

I stick to asian food, because many asians are lactose intolerant. You will rarely find milk dishes in Japanese food. Once you learn the basics, you can make Thai (coconut milk is creamy like milk with no lactose), basic chinese, and basic Japanese food with ease. Sushi, for example, goes down really easy with me.

speaking of asian food...kikkoman makes a pretty good stir fry sauce. so easy. it's in a bottle and you cook up your meat and veggies and then sump the sauce in....viola! stir fry! It's decent and takes about 15-20 mins from start to finish.

My name is Kickycan, and I am lactose intolerant.

I used to eat Apple jacks all the time, and then gradually, I would get the worst cramps and explosive diarrhea everytime I ate them. Like a dumbass, I thought, Geez, why are Applejacks doing this to me? It took me months to figure out that it wasn't the applejacks. Smile
