Hi, I stumbled across this site and am glad I did. I will be 50 in one month and have been taking Forteo since September. I have osteoporosis. To me Forteo was the only logical answer to my bone problem because from talking to doctors and reading many articles Fosomax and actonel only plug up the holes so on a BD Test density improves but not the strength of the bone. I chose not to do Actonel. But, I'm still uncomfortable with any med but I need something. My side effects are most leg cramps and headaches. Sometimes I get a bad night where I wake up and feel dizzy, nauseaus, and with a headache and on those nights I wonder if I am doing the right thing. It is encouraging to read all your posts. I personally do not know of anyone else on the drug and about the rats I agree with the ones who say we are not rats. Their bone metabolism is very different than ours and the doses they took were much more than what we take. After I am done with Forteo, however, I was told that I would need something to maintain my bone density. I have no idea yet what that will be. I'm still thinking of getting a second opinion just to see.....

Wonderwoman,
Just curious as to what your T-scores are. Usually only people with severe osteoporosis who have broken a bone are prescribed Forteo. In my case, mine isn't that bad yet -2.7, but I've tried every other osteo med and can't tolerate side effects from any of them. That's why I'm currently thinking of trying Forteo, but was told I must take either Fosamax or Actonel when Forteo is done (18-24 months). Since I can't take either of these, I have a problem unless they come out with some new drug in the next two years.
I too have been prescribed Forteo. Haven't taken it yet. Still doing research . I am 46 and am considering Aredia since fasomax is not effective for me anymore . Has anyone out there received positive changes in their t-scores after one years' use of forteo. Also, are the leg cramps very bad??? How about other side effects. Have you used fasomax and found that it stopped improving the BMD after a while?? Please help. Thanks.
forteo
I have been on forteo for a year now. Will be getting my bone density in 2 weeks. I have a few leg cramps and headaches, but they didnt last long. I am 55 and my last densities, were -25 then -39 which I was told it was like a 90 year old person. I do not have the back pain I used to have since taking the forteo. I did take fosamax, but I got worse. I saw the bone specialist this week and he said I was doing great, but he also said their would be a maintenance drug once I was done with the forteo. I feel that this is the last resort for me. I dont want to be in a wheel chair or bed ridden because of breaks. My mother had osteoporosis and was constantly breaking bones, just standing her hip broke and she was a little woman. I read all I could on the drug, and choose to ignore the black box warning, as our bone structure is not the same as rats. I will post again when I get my bone density done.
Some others have talked about Forteo here -

Using forteo
I have been taking Forteo for last 3 months. I am able to walk now, which was not possible earlier, but I am also experiecing a dull dragging pain in both the thighs running down to the knees. Would like to know if anyone of you has experienced the same and is it ok?
