Does anyone know if the side effects from Forteo, i.e. dizziness, nausea, etc. go away after a while?
I have was diagnosed with osteoporosis two years ago, and my doctor has now perscribed Forteo. I was on Fosemax for almost two years and my osteoporosis got worse. I need to know more about this Forteo. Please let me know if anyone has been taking Forteo and if their bone density scores have improved while taking this medication.
Forteo
I have been on forteo for a year now. Will be getting a bone density done soon. I had the leg cramps and dizzines in the beginning, but am now over it. No side effects since the first 3 months. I feel better taking the drug, as I have no more back pain. My lower back was that of a 90 year old and I am only 55. This is my last resort, as far as repairing bone. I will post when I get the bone density done. Its is scheduled for the 1st, but will try to get it sooner. I saw the specialist Thursday and he said I was looking good, as the scoliosis (which can come with osteoporsis) did not look as bad. He did tell me there will be a maintenance drug to take after my two years, but dont know much more than that.
I am male, 62 years old, mild osteoporosis with one rib fracture to date. I was on Fosomax and Actonel for 5 years, with no improvement and very slight decline in bone density. I have been taking Forteo for one week and have felt extremely tired. I have read on ABLE2Know that some people using Forteo have experienced more rapid DECREASE in bone mass than while taking Actonel or other medications.
I am a little concerned about the wisdom of taking this drug. One internist recommended that I take it, and the other recommended that I NOT take it. He felt the drug was too risky. My bone specialist at UCLA recommends taking Forteo.
I would appreciate any news from those people who are taking Forteo or who have recently learned something about it. Thanks.
forteo
i am 23 and had 5 surgeries on my hip from a snow boarding accident i had when i was nineteen....none of them healed.....i was diagnosed with osteopenia in february and put on forteo...i have had any and every side effect known to come from this drug, and im not sure if they really get better but rather evolve..when i first started taking forteo, i was in complete agony...muscle aches, extreme fatigue, pain, nausea, headache.....now i get dizzy, shortness of breath to the point where i feel as if i cannot breath, chest pains, i have experienced weight gain but i struggle to keep it off....i was a normal, healthy kid before this so it has to be coming from the forteo....this is a drug that is still being tested and everyones bodies are different... they do not know all there is to know about this drug and it is a bit unsettling considering the amount of pain and anguish i have had from just starting this medication. i was wondering if anyone has experienced mood changes from this medication? as depression seems to be looming over my head.
Forteo
FORTEO is approved for use in both men and postmenopausal (after the "change of life") women with osteoporosis who are at high risk for having broken bones (fractures) from osteoporosis.
Before starting treatment, talk with your doctor about the possible benefits and risks of FORTEO so you can decide if it is right for you.

I wa so glad to read your post, as it is difficult to find any information regarding forteo taken by pre-menopausal women. I have been taken the drug - hormone - for 7 months and had to discontinue because of the vast side effects. Weight gain, the spare tire that is often talked about with this drug, mood swings, acne, skin rash, facial hair, leg cramps and insomnia. I have been off Forteo for nine days and am still not sleeping well and have has a psoriatic flare. Forteo sounded like a miracle to build new bone. And it might be, however maybe not for younger women. I haven't been able to find any studies on this. Has anyone?
Forteo
I have side effects from Forteo . Have been on the injections 30 days and experiencing joint pain - shoulder and hip also muscle pain upper arm, calves and thighs.
Am stopping injections to-day see Dr tomorrow
Any body else suffering? I want to continue because of the success of the medication but must first get relief losing a lot of sleep and taking a lot of pain killers.
forteo, fatigue
I have been searching online to see if others are experiencing the same side effects from Forteo that I have. I am 50 yrs old and have been taking Forteo for about 2 months now. I have had 7 fractures in the last two years related to bone problems from kidney dialysis, transplant and post menopause. No dizziness, but aching thighs, deep down sort of ache and extreme fatigue. The fatigue is not mentioned much but I have been finding some reports of this on other forums. The fatigue is related to the Forteo for sure. It is so bad that some days I just want to cry. These are the only side effects that I have noticed. Am interested to see if anyone else out there is experiencing the fatigue.

I am trying to decide if I should take Forteo myself. I have taken Actonel for the last 4 years but my bone density has decreased to around -3.1 I am turning 50 this year and was diagnosed with osteoporsis about 10 years ago. I've never had any fractures, but the doctors are very alarmed at my low BMD.
What concerns me is the lack of study and the lack of any conclusive proof on the cancer risk to humans. Do doctors really know what happens 10 years after having taken this drug? Will bone cancer show up then?
@jerilynn,
I am 29 years old on forteo because of 2 spinal fractures within 2 years (one stress fracture from marathon running, the other from a fall). I started forteo in Sept 2011 and stopped 2 months later because of side effects: terrible pain, dizziness, nausea, elevated heart rate, and very irregular periods even though I am on birth control. My endocrinologist begged me to restart forteo because he thought this could have been all related to the stress of my accident. I started again in February 2012 and the same side effects have returned with the addition of acne and the spare tire. I know I need to do what's best for my bones but I don't know how much to compromise. I don't feel or look like myself! Have you had any luck finding an alternative or a better way to live with it?
@xxsharon,
i too have been researching and trying to find if others have experienced thigh pain with forteo. i am 52 yrs of age and have had 7 fxs also but mine were due to long term prednisone and methotraxate therapy since 27 yrs of age for tx of rheumatoid arthritis. i had only taken forteo for 1 month and started expereincing deep thigh pain that occurred when standing after sitting for 30 mins to an hour and also feeling as if tendons and ligaments were pulling in the back of my thighs. i contd to take the med for 1 1/2 months and have now stopped it and the thigh pain is almost gone but now having severe knee pain. i had seen where it has s/e of leg cramps and generalized pain but i was beginning to wonder if something else was wrong with me
