Is Europe Warming Towards Bush?

Reply Sat 1 Jan, 2005 04:53 pm
A couple of guys from The Economist seem to think so. Their reasons include the death of Arafat, the murder of Theo Van Gogh and the "growl of the Russian Bear".

If nothing else, it's interesting reading and I look forward to hearing from our European members.

The authors of that article, Micklethwait and Wooldridge, write for The Economist.

But it doesn't look like as if this article was published/printed in that magazine at all.

No, it isn't, Walter. It's an essay which was published in the Houston Chronicle. I merely mentioned that they are writers for the Economist, which was pointed out in the article.

No, you said

As far as I could find out, they wrote 6 articles within the last 5 years for The Economist.

I doubt that this qualifies for being "guys" from The Economist.

OK Walter...you can complain to the editors in Houston if they misrepresented these guys.

How's that?

Europe is not warming up toward Bush - never have
and never will.

I've been to several european countries last June and
everywhere do they think the same about Bush: incompetent!

Your quote does not support the idea the Europe is warming to Bush.

Rather the opposite.

It is like saying you may not like the drug dealer down the street, but you learn to avoid him and to be polite when you can't.

Maybe thinking him incompetent is a step up.

I take that the reason the fellows that wrote the article think that Europe is warming to Bush is because Elton John accepted an award from the White house and another fellow said that "Foreign policy cannot just stop for four years."

From there they go on to list reasons why it would be easy to warm to bush, not that Europe is actually warming to Bush.

Lastly, fifty-one percent is not "a large body of conservative American opinion."

I think that the description "grumpy acceptance" is more accurate than anything else the article had to say. The rest is typical spin. The second term president is just not as threatening as the first term; I guess this is where the term "lame duck" comes in.

Bush has basically saved them from their own stupidity, and nobody holds their breath waiting for the stupid to learn gratitude.

Europe's collective political mind appears to be in the "Euro" dumpster. It's their own fault, and they've been there before.

For starters there was the three-way deal in which North Korea was shipping nuclear materials to Libya and Saddam Hussein's technicians and scientists were starting to put together nuclear weapons and the missiles to carry them. Bush apparently has since stationed submarines off the Korean peninsula with orders to sink any ships which carry contraband and Khadaffi has renounced the whole business and given all the nuclear **** up.

You have to assume that in the absence of Bush's anti-terror efforts those guys would have tested that stuff out on near targets like France and Spain before trying to flatten D.C. and NY.

I mean that's just for starters...

Sure. Why do you think France and Germany didn't support the war in Iraq? Because they both were selling equipment to the Iraqis under the embargo. They were both benefitting from illegal diversions from the so called "oil for food" program run by the corrupt U.N. As I've said before, Haliburton is now the one laughing all the way to the bank, as they rip out european supplied infrastructure and replace it with their own.

Is Europe warming up to Bush? I don't see how they can't. He won the 2004 election without any uncertainty. The folks crying in their beer from the 2000 election, well, they're still crying in their beer.

Thanks.

Well, yes, my social status grew from all the benfits I've got from the oil for food program.
So I'm still crying in my beer.
True.
