In Washington, Call for a Second Election

By SARAH KERSHAW

Published: December 30, 2004

SEATTLE, Dec. 29 - Dino Rossi, the Republican candidate for Washington governor who won the Nov. 2 election by a hair and a recount by even fewer votes but then lost in a third count, asked his opponent Wednesday night to join him in requesting that the state vote all over again.

Christine O. Gregoire, the Democrat and the state's attorney general, who won a final recount last week by 130 votes out of almost 3 million cast, refused, with her spokesman saying, "N-O, no."

Wednesday evening, a day before the Washington secretary of state was set to certify Ms. Gregoire, as the winner of the long, drawn out race for governor, Mr. Rossi, a businessman and former state senator, sent Ms. Gregoire a letter saying: "The uncertainty surrounding this election process isn't just bad for you and me it is bad for the entire state. People need to know for sure that the next governor actually won the election."

That is the height of hypocrisy were he concerned for the people's need to know who actually won the election, I can only wonder why when it looked as if he won why he was silent on the need for a second election. Wonder if Bush would have considered that since his first election was to say the least questionable.

Yeah. On the one hand I think a second election is not a bad thing for democracy's sake. On the other hand, I'm not surprised that the Democratic candidate would refuse just as the Republican candidate did when it looked as if he had won.

Obviously a fourth and a fifth recount will need to be done. Then another recount by a different authority to be sure.

Well, they did win the recount. Only after the democratic whining was an additional recount made. I believe an additional recount appears neccessary. Best of 3 and all that.

I am sure based on what we have observed of republican fair play your feelings would be the same if the shoe was on the other foot. I am also sure that the moon is made of cheese. They are coming to take me away.

I say let them duel. That might bring a little civility to the scene.

As the only poster here who actually lives in WA, I think another election is absurd. There's a poll on the Seattle Times web site right now, asking if this should happen. The poll is exactly split down the middle.

The same thing would happen again: an absurdly close vote and massive claims of missing ballots, etc.

Time to move on.

The first one to find the WMD's is the winner.

If the initial vote and the recount indicated the same winner, why was a third re-count necessary? Was there a legislative reason for the third recount?

The third recount was legal under WA law. The Dems raised the money to pay for it. No one questioned the legality of the third recount, which was a hand recount.

And I might add, after all the finagling that resulted in a Bush win in Florida in 2000, the Republicans have no leg to stand on in this case. Sorry.

I think the first recount was a machine recount and the margin of victory was something like 42 votes -- which was the impetus for the hand recount.

There does appear to be reason for another election, since election officials are either extremely corrupt or extremely incompetent - kept finding more boxes of uncounted votes for each recount. Sound a little fishy to me.

If officials are corrupt or incompetent, what point would there be to another election? The same officials would oversee it.

Have you followed what is happening in OHIO. They keep finding uncounted ballots. The US elections are fair and above board at least that is what we are selling to the rest of the world. Do you think they believe us?

Perhaps they can get Jimmy Carter or maybe some officials from Syria to oversee the elections.
