Hallo!!

I read a sentence yesterday when I was teaching my students a story written by the famous H.K.Anderson, "emperor's new clothes".

In the story, the two rougue come to cheat the king and claim that they know how ro weave invisible clothes. And then I found this sentence..

Both of them "affected to work" together .

What does this phrase mean? Is this archaic expression?

Thanks

Well...affected means to happen, to be, to do, to have happen, to have done, ect.

So... They..were..made..to work together? Or..they had worked together..or... Yeah, alright. Smile

I know, msolga. You have no idea how many times I have screamed at my monitor, "ARRRRRGH! MSOLGA HAS IMPROPERLY USED "EFFECTED" YET AGAIN!!!!!!"

I get so pissed I turn off my computer and either go for a walk or have a drink.

It has that kind of effect on me.

They pretended to work together in a very showy, spectacular way. One would hold the tape....query the other....move the tape slightly...query...move back....

Of course, they were doing no real work.

Ms. Olga--

"Affected" --"pretended" with a great deal of hoity-toity, overacted, pretentious behavior.

Come on, you've read at least one trashy novel with an "affected" heroine full of pretense and posturing--no?

Confused

Sorry, Noddy, I'm lost here. Possibly because I'm cooking an ambitious (for me) lasagne while A2King. Doesn't do wonders for my concentration.

"In public, the pair affected friendship. In truth, however, they despised each other."

So it was with the pair who affected working together. The two "tailors" in the story held up a tape measure to measure the air, claiming it was the finest fabric. They flailed away with scissors, and swore the fabric was being cut in the latest fashion. With needles and no thread, they pretended to sew garments for the Emperor.
