STOP THE PRESSES!!!
I finally settled on my favorite mass-produced easily obtainable inexpensive beer....it is
Whitbread Pale Ale
I first had it in the pubs of Wales in the sixties but it took me 4o years to realize it is my favorite...of course it helped that the grocer was selling it for $9.99 a 12 pack...
that's about average for special brews....but seems to be a good value...I'll look for it today

Shiner has a special brew out this year only, and damn if it ain't good:
Shiner 100 Commemorator
Quote:
Brewed in the traditional Doppelbock-style, this mildly-spiced, toasted-caramel ale is arguably one of the tawniest lagers around. It is a malt beer brewed for consumption and sometimes dubbed as "liquid bread" since monks developed this style of beer to help them fast during the Lenten season. The Commemorator is as rich and robust as the 100 years of Shiner heritage it represents. Available for a limited time only through the end of 2009. Savor a pint while you can.
Back in Germany, the Doppelbocks tend to be syrupy-sweet -- a flavor I'm not particularly fond of in a beer. But if the Shiner 100 Commemorator is different, I may well give it a try. Is it?
It is slightly sweeter than their bock, but I would not describe it as "sweet", let alone "syrupy-sweet".

picked up the sierra nevada tico and it was very good...also , on a whim, picked up an oil can of a new Fosters called premium ale. Much better than the regular Foster's. Sipped it with chorizo and manchego cheese slices on Goya crackers...good stuff
reporting in on last week's brew:
Got the Sam Adams mixed 12 pack and while the porters(dark) are good the Scotch Ale tastes like the draught lines in the pub hadn't been cleaned in 40 years...
stick to the Boston Ale
