sozobe - If I lived in Manhatten, I'd pick a small room, seal it off except for the door, and be that much more prepared in case the worst happens. Where I do live, I consider the prospect of attack so remote, that I will not make the effort.

These guidelines were not issued to Manhattanites only.

I suggest wrapping yourself in Saran wrap and then covering your mouth, nose and ears with duct tape. Yeah, that's the ticket.

sozobe - The fact that I choose not to implement them because of where I live does not mean they might not be needed here. It is an indicator of my comfort level, not the need for the precaution.

I would think people would be happy. The government gave you both information on how to be safer AND something new to complain about. How great is that?

It's a good start, Trespassers. Now if that same gov't decides on a more rational approach to the terrorist threat, that would be a good next step. Say, cool our jets on attacking Iraq and figure out where our real risks are based.

I'm going out driving in my car on errands. I guess I should cover and tape all the windows before I go. Damn, I only have black plastic sheeting!

I do not either, however, they have to be sensible. Plastic sheeting and duct tape. You have wonder about the mentality of someone who would make that suggestion. These are the people who we depend upon to protect us?

If you lived in Manhattan I can assure you that you would rethink that position. Consider if that was viable would you than stay in that room waiting for the attack? Unless you had advanced knowledge and were given time to reach the room what good would it do you?

Actually, duct tape and plastic sheeting is the standard recommendation for shelter in place, for people living near refineries, etc.

I'll concede that, since I live more than 100 miles south of DC, the duct tape idea seemed pretty silly to us. If I lived there or in NYC
perhaps I'd feel differently.
One of my co-workers opined that, if she was faced with the prospect of spending numerous days cooped up with her relatives, she'd rather run outside and breathe deeply.
Does anyone remember the debates that took place back during the Cold War? What would you do if you built a bomb shelter and your neighbor/best friend didn't? Would you let him in or not?

It is just as ludicrous in NYC as it is anywhere else in the US

I guess we do deserve the leaders we have:

WINSTED, Conn. (AP) Paul West didn't take the federal government's terrorism alert lightly.

By Wednesday, half his entire 19th century farmhouse was covered with plastic to protect his family from a chemical or biological attack. He planned to finish the job Thursday.

West paid $250 for 3,500 square feet of plastic and other supplies Wednesday morning.

"Why wait?" West said. "If there is an attack, how are you going to get the plastic?"

West said he had a hard time finding enough plastic for his Platt Hill Road home. He initially wanted to make a "safe room" using plastic.

"It's an 1800s house so there's no modern insulation and it has the original windows too," West said. "I thought it would be best to cover the whole thing."

realjohnboy, I do remember those Cold War discussions. But it hardly mattered, since no one I knew had a bomb shelter. But I guess most of us have access to duct tape. So now the question is: Do we share our tape and plastic with those too improvident to seal up their homes in time?

Is the White House covered in plastic? How about Cheney's undisclosed location? I see a great Presidential photo op: Bush in cowboy boots, taping shut the ranch in Crawford. Set a moral example, Mr. President!
