It would apply to the word "show.'


Although it can be used intransitively (without an object or with a prepositional phrase as a complement), it is obviously not the case here. Of course, it may be not too obvious with a pronoun like "him" that can have both "accusative" and "dative" meanings. But if you replace it with a noun (or a noun phrase), the transitive nature of "trust" in this type of construction becomes more obvious: "I trust my wife", or "I trust John".
