Bush Awards Medal of Freedom to Three

Tuesday December 14, 2004 8:16 PM
By JENNIFER LOVEN

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Tuesday to three figures who were central to his Iraq policy, former CIA Director George Tenet, former Iraq administrator L. Paul Bremer and retired Gen. Tommy Franks.

Democrats suggested Bush should have looked elsewhere, at least in the case of Tenet, in awarding the government's highest civilian honor.

Bush lauded all three for playing ``pivotal roles in great events'' and for advancing the cause of liberty in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I would like to know exactly what the hell is between Bush and Tenet. Bush is OBVIOUSLY privy to something about Tenet we're not. I thought in the least, Tenet should have been sacked shortly after 911.

Now the medal of freedom....

Question: why wasn't Colin Powell included in the medal giving? He threw away his honor by testifying at the UN, but at least he started out fairly honest. Maybe that's the answer to my question.

Will this be the birth of a new term? "Hush medals."

Perhaps it is the other way around. Tenet may be privy to something about Bush that we don't know...if you get my drift!

I'm OK with Tommy Franks....

But Bremer? And George "Slam Dunk" Tenet?

WTF is this -- the Special Olympics?

This raises the obvious question: If this kind of failure is rewarded by the Bush administration, what on Earth would you have to do to get fired? Oh, yeah -- I remember...

...tell the truth.

I think you might be onto something re "hush medals". Just what the hell does Tenet know? You can't make this sh_t up. These people are war criminals at best.

Handing out medals to Tenet and crew is no surprise, really. Indeed, this phenomenon is actually of venerable heritage and generally well-understood. In an army, if a unit performs a mission with gross incompetence, the commander has two options: court martial the soldiers or award them medals. Since charges of gross incompetence and court martials reflect badly on everyone in the unit's command chain, whereas medals reflect well on both the recipients and their superiors, the obvious response is to award everyone medals.

This phenomenon is explained in further detail in this book.

Don't you get it yet, Woiyo? HE DIDN'T provide false info.

He's being given the medal for taking the fall.

Oh, people. It would be WAY too obvious to give a "hush medal'. Cash would be the currency.

Tenet's quoted by ...whatsisname...anyway, it was documented, written in stone, in triplicate...And the Brits had the same intel.

Please don't go off on another goofy conspiracy theory.

So I was watching Hardball last night and Chris Matthews said 'hush medal'. Do you think he reads A2K?

This post says, essentially, nothing.

There is a much greater probability that Tenet supplied Bush with somewhat accurate info than gigantically inaccurate info. You just don't want to believe that there could possibly have been manipulation from the executive end.

Stop being naive.

While I enjoy a good conspiracy theory as much as the next person, here's a more down-to-earth explanation for there wacky choices:

Isn't this simply a matter of Bush affirming his own strategy vs. Iraq? Giving these medals is like saying, "All is well in Iraq. I'm honoring those who made it so."

That's my take on this nonsense...

Also a nice spin/distraction: He got a medal, so he must've done right. See the nice shiny medal?

Give 'em an act with lots of flash in it
And the reaction will be passionate
Give 'em the old hocus pocus
Bead and feather 'em
How can they see with sequins in their eyes?

What if your hinges all are rusting?
What if, in fact, you're just disgusting?

Razzle dazzle 'em
And they;ll never catch wise!
