The Sergeant goes through the motions, throws and frops flat, but lands half way to the rock-pile to the laughter of the man.
In the sentence, the Sergeant is showing how to throw a grenade.

The idea is that, in order to protect yourself from shrapnel after throwing a grenade, it is desirable to throw yourself into a prone position on the ground (drop flat).
