I can't help but say this - ehBeth & hamburger, I envy your family! You are so lucky. <sigh>
I agree that I'm lucky, msOlga.

hamburger wrote:anyone remember the song : "open the door, richard, open the door and let me in ! " perhaps richard is the name of the new year ? hbg
My mother used to sing that... as far as I know, there were no other words.
Yes Beth, you are very lucky and we're all very lucky NOT to be vacationing in the Maldives or Thailand or Sri Lanka just now.

can you hear me crooning ? i checked the 'louis jordan' reference also. he sure was one crazy entertainer. he was right up there with 'spike jones', another one of my 'favourite' entertainers ! i taped some of lj songs from some old records a friend of mine had. i received "a spike jones family christmas" CD from ehbeth a few years ago , and it's one heck of a christmas party ! also am lucky to have a double CD of spike jones including his version of "hawaiin war chant" - listened to it before our recent cruise to hawaii - it was of great help to understand the local lingo ! greetings from'doodles weaver' aka hbg
here is another german custom that according to the german news is still being practiced around new year's: TOUCH A CHIMNEYSWEEP ! at the same time say : 'eins, zwei, drei, vier ... das glueck gehoert mir ! ' (one, two, three, four ... luck belongs to me !). ... i remember that that a few years ago while visiting in germany we walked across the street to touch a chimneysweep for good luck (the sweeps are quite used to it). so here goes : " ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR ... GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ... PROSIT NEUJAHR !" . hbg
Yeah, except there are hardly any chimneysweeps left.
Actually, a chimneysweep is considered bringing luck
at any time of the year. We exchange little figurines
of four-leave-clover, little pigs, a horseshoe, and a
chimneysweep on New Years.
Happy New Year to all of you.
May it be the best ever!
a nice serving of herring salat on pumpernickel would be perfect
do i have time to go to the market?
Sounds good too. I prefer the white version with apples
and onion rings, along with potatoes.
Gosh, it's not even 10 am here and I'm already hungry.
hamburger makes the very very best herring salat.
beets and apples and sour pickles and potatoes and mystery dressing with the herring.
That means you slowly have to get rid of the
spekulaas in your signature ehbeth

here are plenty of 'chimney sweeps', go ahead and touch ! >>>
TOUCH HERE FOR GOOD LUCK !
Hehe, that's cute hamburger, but to tell you the truth,
I think I was touched by a chimneysweep at birth. I've
had much luck in my life so far.....
never hurts to tie a double-knot, cj ! GOOD LUCK ! hbg
hamburger und Calamity,
There are five sweeps to touch - so.....
"Eins, zwei, drei, vier, funf -
Gute Gesundheit und Gluck in Zukunft!"
Kinda difficult to find a good rhymer with funf.. grin
This is fun, you are all so interesting. Thanks
You're right about the tagline, cJane. It'll be on the move soon.

Don't tell Setanta that I've been touching chimney-sweeps.
You're right danon: 5 or fuenf doesn't rhyme with anything.
Hehe, now I collected all the lucky charms for you all.
So use it whenever needed. We call them "Gluecksbringer"
