Lola:-

All you need type is Talkin' John Birch and all that goes through my head in a flash. But it's nice you taking the trouble just for little old jelly-brain.
I still want to know about the copyright.

I wrote a little song late one night
'Bout a goose and a golden egg.
I posted it to a publishing house
They said,"not even if you beg"
"Not even if you beg!"

Or

I wrote a little song late one night
'Bout a doctor and a goose
I sent it off to the man on the hill
I said,"Hey man,turn that loose"
"hey man,turn it loose".

The title is Happy Landings.

Have you a preference above. It's 15 verses and I used to be able to really rock it when I got a Fender on.I wasn't feeling sad or blue at the time.

gee whiz, spendi. I'm impressed with both of those little verses, why would you have to choose? The second is more hopeful and inspires a sense of positive motivation, but so does the first, in a funnier kind of way. So if I have to choose just one, I'll choose the first.

Now, I'm sorry to tell you that I have to.......I mean have to step into the shower. I'm expected at breakfast on the West Side at 10 am and I'm not going like I am at this moment.

But my Saturday plans were just cancelled. My friend isn't going to make it here from Phily as we'd planned. So I'll have time for fun with Spendius soon. It's been a while since I could just sit down and do what it takes to do you justice.

I'll check back here before I leave the house. But right now, I gotta go.

Lola:-

The next verse goes-

The very next day an ambulance comes
Three men with arms and chains
They said "You'de better come with us son
You've got too many brains."
"You've got too many brains."

Spendius, We must first assume that we have the proper knowledge to talk about any subject. Secondly, we must also assume that the participants in the discussion has the proper language skills. Thirdly, we must also assume that the participants has the ability to understand what is being vocalized by the participants. Too many assumptions to really get a reasonable debate between ignoramuses. ** The president of Harvard University recently stated that women lack the ability to work in science and math. I personally think that president is an ignoramus.

cicerone imposter,

Firstly,good morning.

Secondly.your second and third sentences contain a solecism.I wouldn't normally mention such things, out of politeness and also because on these threads I would soon become exhausted, but as you specifically mention language skills I decided to make an exception.
Thirdly, the repetition of "participants" in your third sentence is an awkwardness of style which writers usually try to avoid. Also, the last three words of that sentence are superfluous and the sentence is considerably improved by omitting them.
If I dare allow myself to get fairly pedantic I would say that your fourth sentence is hardly a sentence at all and that the asonance with the "rea" sound doesn't ride smoothly through my synapses and thus it might have a similar grating effect upon other contributors to this thread such as the refined and delicious Lola and that expert of the highly wrought phrase who I have come to refer to as the "Major General".
We English find the use of the term "math." somewhat odd although we accept it now as modern American usage. We see no reason to avoid "mathematics" unless,of course, the recipient of the communication is not deemed worthy of the effort to type the extra seven letters. One might easily proceed from there to a feeling that the correspondence might be avoided altogether. In the event that the president of Harvard used the abbreviation it would tend to render his pronouncement slightly less effective which would be a pity as the tenor of it is not all that far from the truth as is to be expected from a man in his exalted position.

Hey c.i.I'm a good bloke really.I'm having a bit of fun but it is important,in my opinion, that our two nations speak the same language.I also see it as a compliment to my fellow threaders and threaderesses to make at least a semblence of effort in the construction of my posts. This is a general principle in all human relations and I think you would derive many benefits from it if you take this in the spirit in which it is meant and practice the art a little more. The American educational system is notorious for it's shortcomings,as Cecil Rhodes pointed out so forcefully, and you are thus prevailed upon to find your own remedies.

Best wishes

spendius.

p.s.Have you lived in the polar regions?I am interested in the dietetics in those regions.
pp.s.By the way-The use of p.s. and pp.s.signifies a familiarity with Mr Eric Partridge's USAGE AND ABUSAGE which all users of written English ought to have within easy reach and can often be found in any efficient second-hand bookshop.
pp.ss.I would welcome with open arms any expert on English usuage who would point out errors in the above.Top class sportsmen and women spend their professional lives being coached and if it is good enough for them who am I to reject the process.Anybody who did reject it wouldn't last long in your formidable Marine Corps and rightly so.

Old New York City is a friendly old town,
From Washington Heights to Harlem on down.
There's a-mighty many people all millin' all around,
They'll kick you when you're up and knock you when you're down.
It's hard times in the city,
Livin' down in New York town.

Hey there, c.i...........spendius is a good guy, much as he works to prove otherwise.

Spendius, the tongue-in cheek-man, is a winner with heavy boots and a book under both arms.

Hey there, Spendius........c.i. is a good a2k friend. We've even met in person in San Francisco once. And he has a lovely wife. Let me introduce you. Spendius, ole jelly brain, I'd like you to meet my friend c.i.

Hi c.i.If you're a friend of Lola's you're a friend of mine. And you have to respect somebody from silicone valley. It's the epicentre of the universe ain't it.Us pedantic fuddy duddies from the shires have been left standing gawping and gasping with awe and wonder at the munificence and promise enshrined in that cleavage in the seemingly infinite
surface of the world. Many times too.
Do you know any juicy stories about Lola?

where shall I start.......let's see.....but it's not very interesting.

I'd rather comment on one of your missives......but you'll never admit with which one of them you would like me to start. I guess I'll have to reveal myself further by just choosing one. Bother!

Let's check the member agreement. Maybe it says there.

On Abuzz there was a notice that whatever was written on those threads belonged to Abuzz. I don't know about a2k. But it's a sensible question that must be understood.

Lola:-

Did you not detect a superior tone in the c.i. post I made a legthy reply to.I certainly did. There is a claim to have "proper language skills".It is implicit in the post as are a couple of other little boasts.

There are a lot of people,a very great lot,who think that they can read and write.
Well-reading and writing skill is on a scale. It goes from zero, when in nappies say,to the end which is a very long way.It is like high jumping. Most people can read and write on the scale about as high as they can jump on the high jump scale.Anyone who continues to read and write at the same level as when they left school with a flattery certificate will remain stuck at that level for life.High jumpers,in order to be noticed, have to study and practice techniques.I was simply pointing out to anybody who read my post carefully that the same principle applies to reading and writing skills and by doing so I was trying to do them a favour although I will admit that when most of them see what is involved they tend to turn away. The hope is that my threads will be of interest to those few who don't.
Just like the main subject of movies is movies the main subject of writing is writing.
I fondly hope, probably vainly, that I can someday become as good at writing as those who have the gold medals and they are easily identified by their long lasting reputations. The only contemporary writer I can see who will be looked at in 100 years and more is Bob Dylan. And he will have a similar view as here expressed.

I expect he may have, Spendi.........did you c.i.? After all, you're pretty superior yourself.

I have to go back to that conference again tomorrow early. But I'll be here on Monday.

Question, "Do you know any juicy stories about Lola?" The reason Lola still calls me "friend" is my ability to keep secrets.

As for your skills in the English language, spendius, most of my friends do not criticise my communication skills/short-comings. I think it's a bore.

I also have friends in the UK from bankers, civil engineer, CPA, a professional singer, a consultant, and a few others. They don't attempt to make me feel inadequate in my language abilities.

Bye.

I've just sent off a request to the pope asking if he might take a moment to bless this thread. I'm not sure if the request will be granted or not because I'm not sure how he goes about the whole blessing thing. Holy water, for example. Does he wave and say the magic as big tanker trucks speed past his window before heading out onto the highways bound for Rheims, Chicago, and Dublin? How does that get done? Can he do generalized teleblessings, say, just wave in the direction of Portugal?
