PDid, Never did a Perillo tour because of their above average prices for everything, but I have heard excellent reports from people who have used them. I can still remember one of my jaunts to Venice, about a block away from St Mark's square, sitting at an outside restaurant. Some ladies from New York sat at my table, and they were just ending their Perillo tour from southern Italy. They all gave their thumbs up for the tour for the hotels. I was traveling independent, and I also liked my "hotel and tours" on the cheap.
The only time I would recommend using a tour company is when you visit any destination for the very first time to make sure you don't miss out on the important sites. It saves time on transportation, accommodations, and tour guides. Most of my travels to Europe are now independent. I've never visited south of Rome, so I'm considering an organized tour group. Same with Dubrovnik and the western sea shore of the Adriatic Sea.
