Can 1 male budgie mate with 3 females?

Wed 28 Jun, 2017 01:07 am
I have 4 budgies 1 male and 3 female,
My male Pickle has tried to mate with Tigerlily but she has refused to. The 2 other females are mean to Pickle but sometimes try to get him to mate with them. Pickle only shows interest in Tigerlily though. I have spotted the females feed and preen each other, although they are aggressive sometimes. Pickle has courted Tigerlily but she won't let him on her back. I have 1 nesting box in their aviary but I haven't seen them go in yet. Pickle is the youngest of the lot and his crush Tigerlily seems to be the oldest. Tigerlily was in condition 1 month ago but is now out, with Pickle half in condition for breeding. What should I do? Pickle is becoming very sad but still willing to mate with Tigerlily.

@roger,
They are young, about 5-8 months but Pickle is eager. I know you shouldn't breed them till 12 months but I would rather mother nature takes its course instead of forcing them to stop. Plus I only have 1 aviary. I shouldn't choose when mating season starts or ends, nature should:)

@Pickle and Tigerlily,
Do only two of them have names?

@tibbleinparadise,
Yes, mine only have names because my brother hasnt named his yet (although at first, he named them Tom and Jerry, I got him not to because they are girls)
My Budgies are:
Male-Pickle (Because he is green and yellow pied)
Female-Tigerlily (She is green and yellow but not a pied, she is a beautiful flower and as fast as a Tiger)

Tigerlily says no. Pickle needs to smarten up. He may be too young to know the proper rules.

Were they raised with other , more mature , birds.

@Pickle and Tigerlily,
Odd choice of a name for the female. Tigerlilies are usually bright orange flowers with black markings.

@ehBeth,
So? Sometimes, I refer to my cat as Little Lucifer.

@roger,
That doesn't suggest a particular colour to me.

There are blocks of tiger lilies around here

@ehBeth,
You want a tom cat named Tiger Lily? His name is Nermal and is often called youstupidcat,you. He answers to neither.

@ehBeth,
I don't know if they were raised with mature birds, I have only bought the about 2 months ago. These are my 1st birds so..... yer.
Plus Pickle is smart and can talk and do tricks. He just wants Tigerlily to be his mate for life (after all, she is the prettiest female budgie).

@Pickle and Tigerlily,
Typical male. When the female is the only female, she's the prettiest!

@tibbleinparadise,
There are 3 females with him, I wonder if the male is going to act like females because he is surrounded by them!
Sure him trying to mate with 1 of the purple females today. They would of but there was a toy between them:)

@ehBeth,
Sounds like you thought I should have named him Tiger Lily because Nermal doesn't suggest a color.

It's unlikely that the females will mate with a younger male. Sometimes the females will attack younger males. If you want mating to occur, you're gonna have to get younger females and wait. Poor Pickle. I hope his frustration doesn't get too intense. It can lead to medical problems.

@Roberta,
Could also lead to a houseful of birds.
