Snow on the way, so they say, in Boston town.
Be that as it may, let's be gay, no need to frown.
I've checked a few times thru the window pane.
So far it don't even look like there'll be rain.

Folks' grandparents around here claim that if there is a thunder and lightning storm in late fall or winter, there will be snow within 10 days. Tomorrow is the 10th day for us. I'll keep you posted.

Tis the season ~

A neighbor read in the local newspaper about a man who placed three reindeer atop his roof - all lit for the Christmas season. The next morning when he awoke, the reindeer were gone! With further investigation, the man discovered tennis shoe prints atop his SUV parked in the driveway. A few little imps were not going to spoil his Christmas, so the man bought three new reindeer for his roof, and also visited the local hardware store.
During the evening hours, the reindeer display shines brightly for all the world to see. During daylight hours, one can view the lovely reindeer display encircled with yards of barbed wire.

The man smiling, related his Christmas Story to reporters.

Good story too.

Neighbor's (now age 50) grandmother's old wives tale (above) proved to have some validity. We had a dusting of snow last night here in SE North Carolina.

Hi all... thanks for birthday wishes... it's been wild around here. (That's the way I like it!)

Stradee -- I have signed the wolf petition, could barely stand to look at those photos. What kind of sportsman would do that and then have his picture taken? Well, obviously NOT a sportsman.

Matrix -- Loved the animal rules for Christmas. My fave: Don't Pee on the Tree. (Always good advice.)

Nice photos & talk re. Teddy & John Muir. Teddy is my very favorite president for being so good about National Parks and loving the land as I do.

Interesting about the creases in men's pants -- I always thought it looked like they'd slept in them... not so surprising when they're hiking about.

Good to see you Sumac. Cool that you had a dusting of snow. (Just enough to make it look pretty?) Hope you and your kitties and all are doing well.

Danon -- I'm still trying to dig out those photos of me in Barrow. The Top of the World, when I was there, was a beachfront "resort". I can remember standing in the lobby and watching a couple of our more inebriated guests "swimming" for a few Kodak moments in the Arctic. brrrrrrrrrrrrr

Piffka, thanks for signing up! So far there's no word of positive results, but that doesn't mean the hunts won't be halted. Without a media blitz, <or an Alaskan blizzard lasting till the end of the wolf hunting season>
the animals will continue to die needlessly.

John Muir would certainly be disheartened by the world's "progress".

If you have occasion to visit the town of Martinez, the Muir house a must see. The ambience of the place amazing. When standing by the "scribbe room" door, one gets the sense that Muir had just stepped out of his office for a few moments. The spirit of the man evident when visiting the Muir home.

Have a great day all you terrific wildclickers!

Piffka,
I would never in my lifetime figured Barrow to be a "beachfront resort" - things are beginning to shrink just thinking about it. I was there in early September and it was already freezing. There are, as you obviously know, icebergs floating around everywhere. Looking forward to the pix - are you in any of them??

sumac,
Very interesting about the weather conditions - I truely believe that the pioneer women had good weather predicting capabilities through observation of current conditions and the bodies ability to "feel" things like moisture in the air (humidity) and pressure (Highs and Lows).

Stradee,
Nice story - barbed wire - that's funny.

Hi Sumac -- Just stepping off again, but yes... the usual celebrations. A bonfire, many candles, & we'll be watching the skies for signs of the sun's return. Wink We'll also partaking of a slow-roasted pork dinner. Yum. This year we'll be having my birthday cake since all of us were feeling too yucky to celebrate earlier.

Stradee -- I don't think I've ever been to Martinez, but will surely go to the Muir House if/when I do. A fine man -- I love his first big walk. Can't remember where he started (Ohio?) but he walked to the Florida Keys. Now THAT's a hiker.

Yes, I loved that photo too. Just look at the view behind them!

What I wouldn't give to sit down and talk, or just listen to, the greats such as Muir, Audubon, etc.

Thanks for the link Stradee. I especially liked the Muir quote = "Keep close to Nature's heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean."
How true. I sometimes go into the forest here at home and try to be quiet and listen to the woods. After about fifteen or so mins there is usually some activity - then, all heck breaks loose and the animals are either accepting me - or ignoring me. Either way, it's quite calming.

adding=
That quote also reminded me of a book I read many years ago. 'Fig Tree John'
It was about a young Native American who lived by the Salton Sea in S California - going into the mountains, at the advice of his grandpa, on a vision quest to gain a name for himself. He not only listened to nature, but, also listened to his own inner self. Really interesting.

sumac, me too!

Both were just normal people with extrodinary visions. Wondering if either man could've ever imagined how their life work affected advocates and enviornmentalists of today.

Danon, that is a good quote. Muir had a way of tuning in to the enviornment and everyday life as well. Quite remarkable the way he expressed his feelings for the natural world.

I didn't read the book "Fig Tree John", but have you heard of the the book "Medicine Woman" by Lynn V. Andrews? Medicine Woman is an autobiographical account of a woman's search for identiy in a Native American culture. Quite an odyssey of discovery. The book also celebrates the crucial role of the woman in Indian Society.

Is anybody else having problems getting into Care2 this morning?
