No popping or cracking...that's a no-no. Physical therapy will teach you mild exercises to strengthen your back and lessen pain. It doesn't hurt...the whole idea is to REDUCE pain.

I have scoliosis, too, as did my mother before me.

The physical therapy is a good thing.

it also depends how severe it is - I have scoliosis for years and I have absolutely no major problems. If I sit for a long time (and it happens because I am journalist so I have phases of long sitting in front of computer) I feel mild pain and that's it. Of course, there are people with more serious problems.

Eva's suggestion is good - physical therapy is excellent choice for everyone - even if you don't have enough time to go regularly (I didn't) therapist will show you few exercises you can do at your home whenever it's best for you.

Also, I live in town with four rivers so I have plenty of places to swim. And swimming is miracle, believe me Wink

I went to a chiropractor for back pain and he confirmed scoliosis. I was devastated. Then I thought to get a second opinion from an ortho and he said: "No way! You've got a common problem among men who do heavy work. Just avoid stress.

I've had very little problem since then. Lucky me.

confirmed scoliosis
Thak you all very much for the feedback.

all mine is is just a mass of muscle sticking out like the size of a flat childsize football. if i sit improperly or stand improperly for a while, or do heavy lifting then i crawl for afew days and it goes away.

is it normal? is it worth avoiding or more woth treating?

Sounds more like a slipped or bulging disc. I urge you to visit an orthopaedic surgeon for x-rays and diagnosis.

Did they diagnose scoliosis after seeing x-rays, newtoexam? Because that's really the only sure way to diagnose it. That, or ultrasound.

Wow, orthpedic surgeon? that term scares me. yes, this was diagnosed after xray was taken. It doesnt hurt, so hopefully is not a bulge disk thing.

thanks for the continued responses

yoga. works wonders on spinal alignment and reduction of pain. I highly recommend it. It has no ill side effects.

I was told not to do any exercises that would put stress on the back. Also, no running (too hard on the joints) or weight lifting allowed. And no lifting anything more than 10 lbs.

Ask your P.T. about yoga, newtoexam. It can do wonders, but there will likely be certain positions you shouldn't try because they place too much stress on the spine.

Also...some cases of scoliosis are progressive, many others are not. I was advised to have x-rays done periodically to determine if the curvature is getting worse.
