Why Sao Paulo? It is a huge city with lots of pollution and violence.

Why not Sao Paulo? I don't want to live in downtown area. A nice suburban area within 100km from downtown would be a nice setting, and safe. Trust me, I've been told by the Brazilian locals.

Anyway, I've changed my plan, and decided to live in Asuncion, Paraguay. It's my job. Lucky me I could do this.

Hope I can make that place my Utopia. Only time will tell.

Australia, I suspect that's not the case everywhere in Latin America. And if it is the case for any particular place wouldn't that have to do with men dying in war or dangerous work?

I am not sure, that is why i asked. In Fortaleza and Natal, the ratio of women to available men(taken into account homosexuals) is 10:1. I didn't believe it when i heard it, but once there i found it was true. Not that I am complaining. I just didn't know the reason why. I thought maybe their diet produces more girls than guys. Probably a stupid theory but it would be interesting to know.

Do males migrate to other countries as laborers?

No, and they don't have wars. Sometimes in war ravaged countries there is a shortage of males, but this is not the case in this situation.

That's right, Australia. I was speaking generally about causes of gender imbalance. In the case of a bias toward males, the cause is often the practice of female infanticide. Columbia might be an exception to your otherwise correct generalization about South America. I'm thinking of their decades of internecine conflict.

Ah okay, I thought maybe the latin american diet might be the cause. It is just a wild guess though

For me, concepts such as 'paradise' or 'utopia' or 'perfection' are mere illusions which keep people from making their own happiness. I always liked this quotation: "Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have." made by Rabbi Hyman Judah Schachtel (1907-1990) American theologian, author and educator and this one: "Most people would rather be certain they're miserable, than risk being happy." made by Robert Anthony.

Utopia can never be reached. we can never
make a perfect world or anything to free us
from how we are. only we can better our
selves. but not every one will.

that is why it will never happen.

You seem to think Utopia involves a perfect world.

Lots of people do.

Lemme repeat what I said earlier in this thread:

Quote:
In my Utopia...I would have lots of time to play golf...I'd have a beautiful woman as a companion...I'd have a nice house in a decent area...I'd have good food and sunny beaches at my disposal...I'd have friends to talk with, both in-person and in cyber space...my health would be reasonable...I would not be afraid of my eventual death...and most importantly, I would be very satisfied with my existence and my circumstances; I would not be longing for MORE.

Jeez...come to think of it...I have all those things.

My vote would be...for me, this is Utopia.

I'm with Frank; I'm experiencing my "utopia" now. I've been retired since 1998, and I can travel any place on this planet I desire 3 or 4 times every year. When at home, I work in the garden, and dirty my hands in the soil. Larger home maintenance work I used to do is now contracted out to others more able. Every day is a holiday for me - I don't need to answer to any bosses - except my wife. My biggest worries are a) what to eat for lunch, b) should I work on my photo albums today, c) what destinations should I consider for my next trip, and d) how much time should I spend on the computer today? I try to walk at least three miles a day for my excercise. I try to eat a balanced meal every day, but spoil myself with chocolate and/or ice cream when I wish. This is utopia for me!
