farmer can be 农民 nong2 min2 or 农场主 nong2 chang3 zhu3,it depends on it's a western novel or a eastern one. If the man is an owner of the farm, as in the western culture, so it would be 农场主, and if he is only the man to do all the works on the farm for a landlord, as in a eastern culture, it would be 农民。
And the number here stands for the tones since we can't use the sympols here. 1 means the first tone, 2 means the second, and so on.
