The mom was evicted and had no place to take her son. A neighbor offered to care for him but she was not allowed to move in. Its been several weeks and she is now living in a very run down and unfit home with her boyfriend. Shes in a new school district and said she would take him back when school is out. The couple currently caring for the child have not been to court or signed any documents. The mom has refused to visit on several occasions and has not helped financially. She currently does not have a job nor does the boyfriend she lives with.
What should the couple do? Do they have a case to fight for custody since mom left son in their care? Or are they better off to report the situation to cps?

They should consult a family law attorney rather than cherry picking advice off the internet which has no guarantees of accuracy whatsoever.
