Officials have also developed a new computer-based program to help patients better organize their medical histories and present them to their doctors, U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona said.

While many people know their family's health can indicate possible problems with their own, "relatively few people have tried to collect it in an organized way," Carmona said, adding that common behavior, environments and cultures are also factors that influence health.

Such information is cheaper than costly genetic tests and can help patients seek preventive health screenings or get diagnosed earlier, officials said.

I played around with the program last night. There are a number of standard checkoff illnesses, but only two spaces to add in a misc. ailment. I think that the program needs to have more add ons. It is interesting, anyhow, and may be useful to many people.

Phoenix--

After my mother died, I jotted down as much family medical information as I could remember figuring that it would be useful for my sons and for my brother's children.

My brother threw out his copy--after all, he's not wacko about family history the way some people are.

Noddy- It's funny. My father's cousin lives in my area. We are a few years apart in age. When I moved to Florida, I met and spoke with her for the first time since we were kids. One of the first things that she wanted to know was the different illnesses that I had in my family, as she wanted to know for comparison.

My brother is a bit of an ostrich, but cousins on both sides are interested in the medical notes.

I'm reminded of the priests in medieval villages keeping the "Kin Book" to avoid incestuous marriages.

I find it very interesting, Phoenix. I have an online medical history myself, but it just covers me more than my ancestors, whom I feel can be the major contributors to what happens to us and our offspring. I'll definitely check out the site you gave. I think it would be a living gift to give my own kids. Thank you. Smile
