correct sentence(s):
1. my favorite animal is dogs.
2. my favorite animals are dogs.
3. my favorite animal is dog.
i think only the first one is correct, but i got quite a few listings on the Internet. (unless they are talking about different breeds of dog.)
2 is fine or ....My favourite animal is a dog.
I'm going with Ceili on this one....
thank you both. if the questioner only asks for one animal, what then? is #1 wrong?
#1 is wrong because grammatically, 'animal' is singular and 'dogs' is plural, so they don't work together. Ceili had it right. For singular, it should be my favourite animal is a dog.
#2 but reversed sound the best to me "Dogs are my favoite animal"
thank you all. it looks so simple on the surface.
English is a very diifficult language to master. You're doing very well. What is your first language?

This is wrong for the reason Cav pointed out
Interesting. We just had a big debate about something somewhat related in my Italian class. In Italian, there are no collective nouns, but in English there are.
For instance in English you would say:
My passion is dogs. In this case, "dogs" would be a collective singular noun, and the verb has to agree with the object, "My passion".
But in italian, and I'm guessing many other languages, the verb agrees with the subject, in this case, "dogs".
La mia passione sono i cani.
Just thought I'd throw my two cents in here.
