If the United States government is so sure of Iraq's misdeeds and cover-ups why don't they use this information to aid the inspections instead of hinting at it and hoping the rest of us join their war? Do you think that it's possible that the United States wants regime change more than disarmament?
Dreamweaver - welcome to A2K. Yes, I think it's very very possible that our foremost motives for going into Iraq are not the ones being touted.
Establishment of a more easily manipulated hierarchy in that Region and getting the oil being not the least of the ones not being talked about.
Is the American population ignorant of this or do they simply not care what wars are waged in their name?
"their war"!
It's not America's war. It's the CIVILIZED world's war!
Dreamweaver! My thoughts exactly. If they can tell us about full warehouses, trucks moving stuff, why couldn't they continue the survey and disclose where the trucks went to the inspectors?
New Haven,
This war does for the word "civil" what Madonna does for the word "chastity".
Dreamweaver
Exactly what we are discussing right now.
How to explain this to kids? They don't see any logic in not telling the inspectors.
It's an immoral war - period!!!!!!!!!!! And Bush is a crook. So what's wrong with the USA militaristic reigm?
I really love President Bush. A Harvard he-man from the great state of Texas.
And I might add...Bush is civilized as is the great state of Texas!
One thing tax-paying Americans are learning from this Iraqi problem, is that the world is becoming very Anti-American. This fact could have distinct consequences, when aid is sought by those countries who didn't stand by us, through thick and thin at this time in our history.
Damn logical question, Dreamweaver.
It is not an uncertainty principle thing? You know, they can know that they are there, or they can know where - but not at the same time?
Heisenberg reigns supreme
Let us try to be less naive. Let us imagine the following situation: the inspectors with help of the U.S. intelligence reveal all they wanted to reveal and oblige Saddam to destroy this. He complies and casus belli disappears. Saddam is being left alone, and he retains his office. Guess what will be his next steps? Right, he will restore all the inventories that were destroyed. Nothing happened to ability to produce all this stuff, the necessary equipment may be imported by means of unscrupulous businessmen, and Saddam will soon be able to restore his offensive potential.
In case of successful war Saddam is being replaced by more predictable and friendly leader that poses no threat to anyone; this is the most efficient solution for the Iraqi threat problem.
Any additional chance for political/physical survival of Saddam is in favor of world terror.
steissd,
So basically you are saying that regime change is the priority.
New Haven,
Please disregard my earlier attempts at communication. It's now clear to me that we are working with definitions of the word "civil" that do not remotely resemble each other.
ul,
What we are discussing is the reason that evidence is only used to aid in the move toward war instead of aiding the inspectors. Why it's used to shorten inspections rather than strengthen the inspectors hand.
It surely is. WMD is dangerous not per se, but when it is possessed by the wrong regime. USA possesses these for decades and never used them since 08.09.45.
steissd,
If such arbitrary decisions about the benevolence of each regime are valid then finding a pretext for war is woefully simply. Just call them bad guys and mobilize the troops.
