Anyone one know which of these is correct?

The home side is playing a counter-attacking game.
OR
The home side are playing a counter-attacking game.

The home side is creating opportunities.
OR
The home side are creating opportunities.

"Home side" is a collective noun.

Treat it as an "it" even though it is a "they."

In British English, collective nouns are often treated as plural, and followed by 'are'. American English tends to treat them as singular and use 'is'.

That probably explains why both sound ok/normal as we often see both examples.
