Hey, I am watching "Friends" right now... very funny!
This two conversation I don't quite understand the sentence structure. I guess I know the meaning. But it is really difficult to understand if without context.
Joey, you couldn't say anything.
Couldn't if i wanted to. (???????)
Means: even I want to do, I couldn't?
I am gonna kiss you now.
Not if I kiss you first. (???????)
Means: let me kiss u first? Why use not here?
Can anyone give me another example the same as the above sentence structure if it is hard to explain?
Hi Wu Xuan,
(1) 'Couldn't if I wanted to' does not mean 'even if I want to' because it is conditional-- s/he does not want to.
'I'm not going to vote, but I couldn't if I wanted to, because I am not registered.'
(2) 'Not if I kiss you first' is a playful way to express the fact that the speaker wants to kiss the other person. The form is common and can be used many ways:
'I'm going to see you at the party tomorrow'
'Not if I see you first'
This one is a playful way of saying 'maybe I don't want to see you'.
