I can still see my friend on my friends list but... Their updates stopped 3 months ago. I have tried to contact them via messenger and it seems that they are not answering and I can't see if they have read my messages.
Can you still be a friend on facebook but be blocked from seeing the friends updates?

Yes, they may have changed their setting on certain post to close friends only.
