I'm not as surprised as I thought I would be. Sad, yes. But a certain resignation.

There was something -- final? -- about his last two appearances at Lambeau, wasn't there?

I'm glad I saw those last two games, anyway. The snowy one was an all-time great.

I know! I'm kinda sad but also relieved? I think I'm still slightly numb from the NFC Championship game. I'm glad I don't have cable though. I wouldn't want an embarassing situation where, during some Brett Favre montage on ESPN, with the Foo Fighters' "There Goes My Hero" playing in the background, I have to tell my girlfriend, "No, seriously. There's something stuck in my eye."

I remember listening to Dick Cheney ramble on about something last year and I said to myself, "Gus, who on this planet is a more despicable human being than this piece of crap?"

And then I remembered Favre.

It is all a matter of perspective.

I ain't even mad at you Gus. I'm overcome with a great feeling of peace, knowing that you will no longer be able to agitate that vulnerable Favre-spot I have, at least not the same way (Was that vaguely homoerotic? Oh **** am I gay?). His legend is secure, the football chapter of his story closed.

Though I will miss occassionally being jarred from my calm, rational Gargamel persona and spitting some mildly creative insult at you.

I hope you are sitting down, Gus. Look for Favre to go home to his native state (MS?) and run for public office.

Report: Favre sends text message to Packers GM Thompson

The Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre are publicly remaining quiet on reports that the quarterback is reconsidering his decision to retire. But according to media reports, that doesn't mean there's no activity behind the scenes.

Favre has said little about the report that he was considering a return to the NFL, other than telling the Sun Herald of Biloxi, Miss. that "it's all rumor" and that there was "no reason" for a media frenzy. And the Packers said they had "no reaction" to ESPN's report that Favre had an "itch" to come out of retirement and report to training camp later this month.

But WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee reported Monday that Favre sent a text message to Packers GM Ted Thompson on Saturday -- and that Thompson's reply was that he is on vacation and the two men will have to talk later.

And Sports Illustrated reported on its Web site Monday that Thompson has ignored phone calls from Favre's agent, James "Bus" Cook, while sending an intermediary to Mississippi to talk to Favre. According to that report, Cook is expected to request that Favre be taken off the NFL's reserve/retired list within the next 10 days.

Last week, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Favre had communicated his potential desire to return to coach Mike McCarthy, but that talks had not advanced to a substantive stage, according to a Packers source. The source said the Packers would be reluctant to open the door for Favre because "Brett retired for the right reasons, even though I know his family is tugging on him [to play]."

And at least one Packers player said that Favre hasn't completely gotten the game out of his system.

It's been the talk of the town in Wisconsin since last Thursday. I did read that "a self described friend" said Brett's been working out and throwing footballs every morning. This same friend and Bonita (Brett's mom) both blame Thompson for Farve's decision to retire... one saying Thompson encouraged it (friend) and his mom saying that he hasn't made him feel very welcome in a couple years. Evil or Very Mad

If only the front office buffoons would have brought in Randy Moss...
I know lots of peeps didn't want him, but Brett earned the right to play with a Marquee receiver at least once... after spending a career turning good receivers and running backs into over achievers. There can be little doubt what his eminence Ron Wolf would have done.

On the other hand; our current crop is VERY talented... so I imagine Brett's chomping at the bit. I do like Rogers, but I'd obviously prefer more Brett! Here's to hoping!

Yeah, I know what you mean. My take is that there's a heart/head thing going on -- he WANTS to continue to play, but he doesn't want to be dumb about it. I think he'd prefer to go out on a good season rather than going out as a washed-up old has-been.

I think at the end of last year he felt like crap, physically, and felt a lot of pressures to get out, and liked the idea of going out after such a strong season.

But now he's had several months' rest and is feeling really good, physically, and is worried he went out too early.

My guess.

Where are you now, OBill? I thought you were back in FL...?

The whole "yeah I'm retired"/ "um actually not" thing worked well for Michael Jordan...

(The first time anyway.)

I haven't returned to Florida since the massacre. I opted to spend a good deal more time with the little people in my own family... and am now living back in Cedarburg.

Packers organization finally speaks: Favre should stay home
POSTED July 9, 5:22 PM

First he retired, then he hinted that he might want to come back, then he talked to his head coach but nothing came ot it, then he told people he had "the itch" to come back, then he texted the Packers GM who avoided contact at all costs and now this: there is NO news today from Brett Favre but the Packers think he's just joshing and have said the closest thing they can to telling him to stay home.

The current and former Presidents of the Packers spoke today at a marketing event in Wsconsin and dag gummit, they had to answer questions about Brett. Have they spoken to Favre? Of course not, that would mean they'd have to tell him what apparently is a thanks but no thanks message.

They think that it's normal to have regrets and to want to be with the guys at this time of year. Especially when you've done it for more than two decades going back to high school. They take Brett's word from his retirement announcement back in March.

They give no credence to all the behind the scenes and off the record comments from the last 2 weeks. But the men did say that since they believed his intent to retire, then "it's pretty reasonable that as an organization we're going to move on."

This article pretty much sums up my feelings about Brett coming back. I was all for his return earlier this year, but now it's a different story. I'm kind of surprised at myself, honestly.

Which is not to say I won't projectile vomit upon seeing Brett in a Vikings uniform. I'd be interested (no I wouldn't be) to hear Gus' take on that unlikelihood.
