OK so here's my quandary. I tend towards superstition, never more so than when it comes to the Packers. I've missed the last three games. They've won the last three games.

This makes it difficult for me to watch the next one... but I so gotta.

(Ended up being a busy Sunday with a sozlet soccer game and a long party. I guess what I really gotta do is get a functioning VCR, or Tivo...)

Soz...You're makin' me want to watch a game again! I dropped from the ranks in 1997 when they won the Superbowl. I lived in Appleton at the time and the fanatasism was at the most extreme. I just could not take it anymore.

I got a fantastic opportunity to take my boys to Lambeau for the Jacksonville pre-season game. That was such a rewarding experience for us all, even though they lost.

I think I may be able to watch football again now. Walking into Lambeau field is like walking into the shrine to the game. Even if one was never a fan, you can't help but feel the history. The Packers define football and the fan experience defines what being a football fan is.

I lived in Madison at the time! (1997.) Other than Green Bay itself, I'm not sure there was more fanaticism anywhere. The city erupted. It was great. (I like that stuff.)

The picture in the NYT of Brett hoisting Donald Driver on his shoulder made me grin (I can't find it online though).

OK I was just looking for it on Fox's photo gallery and did a double-take when I saw "Falcons kicker Morten Anderson..." Morten ANDERSON? How old is that guy by now?!

Meanwhile, this isn't the picture I was looking for but it's nice:

If Brett's riled up and having fun and the team is young and healthy.... [dares not to hope...]

Believe me, Appleton is so close to the epicenter (Green Bay). And I believe the fanaticism was greater than Green Bay. I know the visiting teams would stay at the Paper Valley hotel downtown. I'm surprised they would even survive long enough to get to the game.

It was a great time. I just had to pull back when I found myself taking the brunt of my bosses anger on the Mondays after a loss. Anything that consumes one's life to that extent cannot be good.

Where are you living now, if you don't mind me asking? I'm in the Milwaukee area.

Ooh, yeah, boss getting ugly after a loss doesn't sound good.

I had pretty much the opposite experience, luckily. I worked in a used bookstore while going to college, had to work Sundays as weekends were all that were reliably available. My boss had never been a football fan, but I was pitiful enough about missing Packers games (I've been a fan for a long time) that he set up a little portable TV so I could watch while putting plastic covers on hardbacks (like you see at the library). It was repetitive work and I usually had a ginormous stack to do, so I could sit there and watch the game while doing it.

He didn't know a THING about football but I started explaining and got him hooked. That was the 1996-1997 season, and it was a good season to get hooked. ;-) Actually maybe it was 1995-1996, then we watched the whole next year too.

Anyway, my Sundays were spent at work, watching the game and discussing the finer points. (It wasn't a very busy bookstore.) (I did get a lot of work done too though!)

I live in Columbus, OH now -- I've shifted my college football allegiance to OSU (from UW-Madison) but the Browns and the Bengals are nothing to me.

4-0!!!

I still haven't watched one though. My daughter's started soccer and our Sunday have gotten way busy. Plus I'm plain scared. I don't watch = they win, so if I do watch...?

Any highlights from people who did watch?

(Against the VIKINGS no less. How'd I miss it? Sigh.)

Whoa, check this out:

Favre: Now vs. Then
Code:Year Age Pct. Yds/Game Yds/Comp Sacks TD Int. Rating
2007 37 .659 301.3 7.1 2.0 2.0 0.5 97.3
1997 28 .593 241.7 7.5 1.6 2.2 1.0 92.6
1996 27 .599 243.7 7.2 2.5 2.4 0.8 95.8
1995 26 .630 275.8 7.7 2.1 2.4 0.8 99.5

And this is cool, from the same story:

Quote:
When Favre left the field after the game, he stopped to hug the Vikings mascot, the stringy-bearded Ragnar. It was the 16th time Ragnar -- a Minnesotan named Joe Juranich -- had seen Favre come into the 'Dome, and the first time they hugged. Ragnar stands for all things Vikings. Favre has been the archrival. Juranich knows he should hate Favre, but he can't. When Favre had gone, Juranich said: "I went out into the parking lots today before the game, because I wanted to tell the fans, 'Don't you dare boo this man today. He's been through so much, and he's such a credit to the game. We should cheer him, and give him credit for being such a great player over the years.' You just have to admire him. I mean this: It's good to see him break it here.''

Need a feel-good story for your sports year? Fed up with Bonds, with asterisks, with Spygate, with dogfighting, with soccer goalies ripping other soccer goalies? With the effect money has on the games you love? Well, Favre's writing a pretty pure story in Green Bay. There might be more good chapters to it. Keep reading.

I actually watch the historic touchdown pass! Then a little of the game afterward.

What a time to tune in!

Besides Favre, I think LeRoy Butler is the only Packer I've admired from recent years.

Soz,

Packers v. Bears is Sunday night. Sozlet surely won't be playing soccer then.

So don't you dare tune in!

I know! That's the thing.

If I watch, and they lose, I can never watch another Packers game again.

And that's the last thing I want!!

(Anyone have any cures for pathological superstition? Amulets, something?)

Nah -- go ahead, Soz. You should watch on Sunday night. Really, you should plan on watching the entire game! Cool

I actually met Willie Wood once and had no clue who he was!

I grew up in the dismal years and had to listen to my parents tell me how great the Pack was back in the day.

Now, having been to Lambeau, I understand.

The game hasn't even started yet.

Starts at 8:15 PM EST!

Hmph.

This whole early bird thing officially sucks, but at least I get to dodge the whole conundrum slash quandary thingie. (Don't want to jinx 'em, do want to watch.)

Go Pack!

I'll read about it in the morning.

(Hope you're happy, Gargamel...)

That's too funny! A couple of times during that 2nd half, I wondered if you were watching. I felt like calling you up and saying ..... "Soz, STOP watching the game!" Evil or Very Mad LOL

I'm not sure what the heck happened last night. I feel like we gave away a win. But there were too many turnovers, and too many penalties. And too many dumb refs with their eyeballs up their ass when one should have been called on the bears.

And then came the conservative BS 2nd half. What the heck was that?? I can't believe McCarthy took his foot off the gas!! If it ain't broke, why fix it? We started running the ball and stopped using the slant. On every 4th down, ya just sat there and said to yourself...."What the hell was that!" Only to see it played out over and over again.

Evil or Very Mad

Oh well......time to regroup. And we will !!

On the plus side....... Morency's da man! Damn he looked good runnin the ball !
