Helen, thanks for the invite, but Pierre unwittingly sent my toga to a courturier in Milan of all places! And tomorrow's Saturday fgs!

The thought of strolling down the Roman Road without the appropriate attire unthinkable! Cool

Hi, everybody...

Have been busy so haven't been able to post for the past week or so, but have continued to click...

Here's a bit more "good news" to add to an already terrific week:

Arctic melt accelerates, governments split
Tuesday, November 2, 2004

OSLO, Norway (Reuters) -- A thaw of the Arctic icecap is accelerating because of global warming but nations in the region including the United States are deadlocked about how to stop it.

Due for publication on November 8, an eight-nation report compiled by 250 scientists says the Arctic is warming almost twice as fast as the rest of the planet due to a buildup of heat-trapping gases and the trend is set to continue.

"We are taking a risk with the global climate," said Paal Prestrud, vice-chair of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA) report, which says emissions of gases from cars, factories and power plants are mostly to blame.

The Arctic icecap has shrunk by 15-20 percent in the past 30 years and the contraction is likely to accelerate, Prestrud said. The Arctic Ocean could be almost ice-free in summer by the end of the century.

Inuit hunters are falling through ice, permafrost is thawing and destabilizing foundations of buildings and vital winter roads while the habitat of creatures from polar bears to seals is literally melting away.

Stradee...
I seem to remember you asking somewhere about the oil spill - here are the latest articles re it:

A short time after that oil spill, there was another one - although smaller - up near the San Juan Islands:

danon...
Sorry to hear you caught a "bug". For the past week, Nortons has been having what I'd consider to be a higher number of AV downloads - sometimes 3 or 4 in a single day. Because of that, I figured something must be going around. Hope your computer gets well soon!

One beautiful surprise that I was able to see this week showed up early on Thursday morning. Here's a picture of it from the other coast...I think it looked much larger in "my" sky, though. (Venus and Jupiter (magnitudes -4.0 and -1.7, respectively) still form a striking pair of bright "morning stars" all week. Look for them in the east-southeast before and during dawn. Venus is the brighter of the two. After their close conjunction (2/3° apart) on Friday morning November 5th, they draw apart rapidly day by day, appearing separated by 1½° on the morning of the 6th but 9° by the 13th.)

Also had a wonderful view of the lunar eclipse out of our living room windows a few nights earlier. I thought his picture, taken from near the Space Needle, was cool:

Matrix -- How do you feel about Luna? I know environmentalists who are v. angry with the tribe. I think it is great to have animal/human contact and it really seems that Luna chose them. The story goes that the father of one of the chief instigators was the late tribal chief. He said he'd come back as an orca and voila... an orca appeared within a year. Hard for them (and me) not to see some significance. For that, I was dreading the dangerous trip they were considering to truck Luna back to L.pod. I do think that they need to continue to maintain a close relationship with Luna, but really, the truth is, I'm hopeful that Luna will create a new pod of his own. It could happen if a female gets interested in him.

I'm not angry with the First Nations People, but I have to say that their actions disappoint me greatly. They are putting Luna's life in grave danger by continuing to coax him near their boats and people. He's been attracted to boats and people all his life, and as much as they may care for him and believe that he is their reincarnated Chief, they are doing Luna a great disservice and could cost him his life. He is still recovering from the many cuts and other wounds he's received over the past spring and summer months caused by run-ins with boats and sea planes.

From the Reunite Luna website:
Quote:
Luna's Pod, the L Pod, was spotted on the weekend in Haro Straight. This was the first sighting in about ten days. The L Pod usually leaves their summer waters for several months during the winter. It is possible that they will go near Nootka Sound, where Luna is currently residing, sometimethiswinter...

ReuniteLuna.com is encouraging the public to take action to help Luna get home this winter. Please visit the action page (the link is on the left) and spend a few minutes to help save Luna. http://www.reuniteluna.com/take_action.php

For awhile, my chip was down - but now, it's up!!
Much better!!!

ehBeth,
And I must say it's a really good looking chip too!!

HofT,
Thank you for your suggested site. I went through the entire program offered - step by step. And, now I am having no problems. There are still two files that I know of that cannot be deleted - I'm sure they are communicating with whomever that is downloading all the crap to me - but by themselves, the files aren't reported as malicious. I suspect them because they are both in "temp" folders and therefore should be capable of being deleted but aren't deletable. Also, one of the files keeps changing it's name ever-so-slightly. I believe these small files are the culprits which communicate an invitation to the bad guy every time I go on line. I must find a really good "file blaster" or "file ripper outer" to get rid of them.
The thought of the person or persons who create and distribute these malware brings to mind "capital punishment is a good thing". ((Sorry Martha.))

That's no good, Danon, as long as these files are there they can morph into vile programs.

Am on a portable now and can't post links but if you look up my posts see one where I'm talking to Don - it's a software highjack thread started by Spinmama - and post the names of your files there. There's got to be add'l programs to solve this, and I will look into that thread later.

Matrix, thanks for the current news regarding Puget Sound oil spill.

Amazing how a ship can distribute 1000 gallons of crude oil and not one company steps up to either report the spill or take responsibility. Not a huge surprise considering the current political climate.

Was reading the Q&A page regarding Luna.

http://www.reuniteluna.com/qanda.php

Seems there are more questions regarding the whale than answers. Certainly hope the inuits and the science community place Luna's safety first and return him to his pod.

Wasn't the eclipse georgous! Nature quite awsome.

Thanks for all the great links, Matrix Very Happy
